New Mexico +7 OVER BYU
The BYU Cougars host the New Mexico Lobos in Provo, Utah at LaVell Edwards Stadium on Saturday. The Mormons have played very well of late, winning 4 of their last 5 games, including a 49-16 home victory over San Diego State last weekend. The Lobos were off last week with a bye, but they too have gotten back on track here late in the campaign, registering three straight victories. They posted a 26-17 win at Colorado State 2 weeks ago in their last outing.
New Mexico's scoring output has taken a bit of a hit this season with the team putting up only 21 ppg thus far. A lot of that has to do with inexperience at the QB position and injuries to key players. Kole McKamey is completely healthy again and playing well. TB DonTrell Moore is the star performer and continues to be one of the most powerful runners in the Mountain West. The team's defense has certainly done their part, leading the league with just 18.6 ppg allowed. The run defense has been especially tough, holding to just 104 ypg and only 10 touchdowns.
Last week the Cougars showed glimpses of the offenses of years past, as it registered a 49-16 victory against San Diego State. Quarterback John Beck is playing well, but he won’t be getting much help here. The Cougars average just 112 ypg this season on the ground and will find little room to run against the New Mexico stop unit. The BYU run defense is ranked third in the conference with 130 ypg allowed, while the pass defense is a completely different story having surrendered 244 ypg to rank last in the Mountain West and 91st nationally.
The Cougars simply will not be able to reproduce their scoring output from either of the last two games. New Mexico will use its ground game and defense to keep the BYU offense on the sidelines. The Lobos should benefit greatly from their week off. In fact, they are a perfect 7-0 SU after byes during head coach Rocky Long's tenure. Other numbers look promising here, as they are 9-1 ATS when coming off a conference game and playing with revenge. 6-1 ATS in their final road games. 6-2 ATS as a dog playing with revenge, and a sterling 7-0 ATS as a regular season underdog off 2+ SU wins.
Meanwhile, BYU is 0-4 ATS off 3 ATS wins over the past decade, and Gary Crowton’s team has stumbled time and again just when it looked like they would get rolling. The last 3 games in this series have been decided by total of 11 pts. A similar outcome is likely here, as these 2 teams slug it out in the trenches. A FG probably will be the difference, as we like New Mexico to get the SU win, and the ATS victory at the very least.
