THURSDAY'S OPINION SELECTIONS
ARKANSAS STATE -7 over Utah State
In a Thursday Night Sun Belt Conference contest, Utah State hits the road once again, as they take on Arkansas State. Both teams come in with poor records on the season, as Utah State is at 2-7 this year, and just gave their head coach Mick Dennehy his 2 week notice. They actually led in the 4th quarter last week, before giving up 2 late TDs and falling at Louisiana-Monroe, 32-25. The setback was the 5th in a row for the Aggies, who now have to play the last game of their four-game road stretch on what will seem like a very short week. As for Arkansas State, they are coming off an embarrassing 45-21 loss at Idaho last week. The Indians have also been struggling lately, losing four of their last five games, with all four losses coming on the road.
Utah State has struggled to get things going offensively and is producing just 16 ppg on 280 total ypg this season. A big reason for the low yardage output has been a horrendous ground attack which is averaging only 65 ypg with a meager 2 ypc. Quarterback Travis Cox has found himself running for his life often this year, but has also managed to throw 14 interceptions against nine touchdowns with a 56.7 percent completion rate this year. Defensively, Utah State is allowing nearly 400 total ypg and a scoring average of 32 ppg.
Arkansas State has found it difficult to produce victories all season because of their inability to score enough points. Despite posting 31 points in their last contest, the team was unable to record a victory over Idaho. Quarterback Nick Noce is a dual threat to run or pass, although is stats are not a big improvement over those of Utah State’s Cox. The Indians' defense has struggled all season as well, allowing more than 36 points and 440 yards of total offense per outing.
Despite our reluctance to back the Indians in the role of favorite, there is simply too much going against the Aggies here. They have struggled tremendously on the road, having not won a conference road game in 2 seasons. Now they have a very short week here, as they got back from Louisiana-Monroe around 4 a.m. Sunday morning and left for Jonesboro early Wednesday morning. This will be their fourth consecutive game in the South and its sixth in 10 games overall. The Aggies went to Middle Tennessee State less than two weeks ago, traveled to Louisiana-Monroe last weekend and then came to Jonesboro on Wednesday. They’ve also visited Alabama, Troy and Clemson this season. Now they have a lame duck coach and rumors of who will take his place to contend with. To add insult to insult, this game was due to televised regionally by ESPN; however, due to a scheduling conflict, it will NOT be shown in the Beehive State. This is certainly a last-minute disappointment for the Aggies who rarely play on TV. Utah State is 0-4 SU & ATS in road finales, and it’s quite likely they will be looking to their final game at home next time out.
The game will be televised locally, so Arkansas State has plenty of motivation to play well in front of real and virtual fans. Utah State may have some early emotion, trying to play hard for their departing coach; however, those emotions will only sustain them for so long, before Arkansas State wears down this road-weary team and claims the SU & ATS victory.
FINAL SCORE: ARKANSAS STATE 16 UTAH STATE 7
Florida State - 6½ over NORTH CAROLINA STATE
In the second Thursday Night NCAA Football contest, #11 Florida State has an ACC road date with North Carolina State. The Seminoles are coming off their seventh victory, a 29-7 triumph over Duke, and are still alive in the race for the conference title; however, a loss here would end that quest. The Wolfpack was actually off to a promising start this season, but losses in the last three outings have turned optimism into despair. Last weekend, the squad struggled offensively in a 24-14 home loss to Georgia Tech.
Chris Rix briefly regained his spot as the starting quarterback for Florida State game against Duke. That lasted one half as he failed to get the offense into the end zone. Wyatt Sexton came off the bench to start the 3rd quarter and was much more impressive. Sexton will be the starter here. Tailbacks Lorenzo Booker and Leon Washington will give him reliable running threats. Defensively, Florida State has played outstanding this season, as the team is surrendering only 13 ppg and 275 total ypg this year. The run defense has been the strength of the unit, as foes are averaging a measly 66 ypg and 2.0 ypc. Also impressive is the fact that they have picked off 13 balls while surrendering just 6 passing touchdowns.
NC State's RB T.A. McLendon will certainly have the attention of the ‘Noles stop unit. He has been hampered off and on throughout his collegiate career. He was healthy last week, but managed just 50 yards on his 18 carries. Defenses can load up to stop the run, Wolfpack QB Jay Davis simply is not getting the job done, with nine touchdowns and 14 interceptions this year. NC State’s strength is their defense with decent numbers, although they don’t quite measure up to Florida State.
Both teams will be desperate for a victory here, with the Seminoles trying to avoid getting knocked out of the ACC title hunt, while the Wolfpack need a win to stay alive for a bowl berth. Ultimately, we have to side with the history and experience of Florida State over North Carolina State in decisive games. We look for FSU to rally behind their young QB, Sexton. The team demanded a change last week and got it. They responded in the second half, and we expect that to carry over somewhat to this contest. We have also noted the ‘Noles history in recovering from SU losses. It takes 2 games following a defeat for this proud team to fully respond, as they are 12-1 ATS off a SU loss 2 games ago. They should be at the top of their games emotionally and physically, as they now fairly healthy.
The same certainly can’t be said NC State. Three linemen missed last week's game against Georgia Tech, as did leading receiver Richard Washington. Wide receiver Tramain Hall left early with back spasms. Washington and Hall are listed as questionable this week, as is offensive tackle Derek Morris. All of the shuffling of linemen and receivers has made it extremely difficult for QB Davis to find any rhythm. It doesn’t figure to get any easier here, against a stout Florida State defense. The early emotions will favor the home team here in this nationally televised night game; however, the Seminoles should weather the storm and pull away in the second half for a comfortable SU & ATS win.
FINAL SCORE: FLORIDA STATE 17 NORTH CAROLINA STATE 10
