Toronto Raptors at Seattle Supersonics 10:35 PM ET
Seattle Supersonics -5 –110 (2 Units)
Seattle is certainly one of the surprises in the Western Conference, off to a 4-1 start that includes victories over Sacramento, San Antonio and Denver. An embarrassing loss at the Clippers has gotten their attention and they are rolling over teams right now. Their 4 wins have come by an average of 22.5 ppg and they haven’t won a game by less than 19 points. The rebuilding process seems to be working quicker than expected. They traded for Ray Allen and Flip Murray, and drafted Vladimir Radmanovic, Nick Collison, Luke Ridnour and Robert Swift. In the process, the Sonics suffered through two losing seasons, their first since 1987. Besides Allen and Lewis, the Sonics are also seeing continued improvement from Radmanovic and Ridnour and they have no one on the active roster that is 30 so their defensive energy is making sense. They allowed 97.8 ppg a season ago so they needed to improve their defense and, of course, their rebounding. Through 5 games, they are allowing 91.8 and only 86.3 ppg not counting the Clippers debacle. They are 4th in the NBA in rebounding differential at +4.8 after finishing 4th from the bottom last year at –3.4. They are playing together as a team and playing smart. Toronto is in their third game of their current west coast swing and coming off a big win at Utah, giving the Jazz their first loss on the season. Utah failed to score 100 points and shoot better than 50 percent for the first time this season. Despite going 2-1, the Raptors have been outrebounded in their last three games, something that the Sonics will take full advantage of.
Here is the recap of the member card for Thursday. Analysis like this comes with all of our releases showing why our winners make sense.
Utah St. Aggies at Arkansas St. Indians 7:00 PM ET
Arkansas St. Indians –7.5 –115 (2 Units)
Utah St. fired head coach Mick Dennehy effective at the end of the season. While the Aggies won’t be throwing in the flag completely, they have lost confidence. They are in the midst of a 5-game losing straight while this will be their 4th straight game on the road. Utah State is playing its seventh and final road game of the season Thursday. The Aggies have traveled more than 23,300 round-trip miles for their road games this season and that will take a toll on anyone. Arkansas St. has one goal now and that is to finish the season with a winning record in the Sun Belt Conference. Winning their last two games would give them a 4-3 record in league play.
Arkansas St. knows the feeling as seven of their first nine games were on the road. They have split their two home games, defeating a strong Troy team and playing Memphis right down to the wire as they actually held a 9-point lead with 4 minutes remaining. Another good loss this season came at Mississippi by just 7 points. Arkansas St. can move the ball, as they are 56th in the country in total offense despite facing teams such as Memphis, Mississippi, Missouri and LSU. The Utah St. defense meanwhile has yielded 427 ypg away from home. The loss against Idaho stung as they lost a third quarter lead but they don’t have a lot of time to dwell on it. Junior quarterback Nick Noce said a quick turnaround could be a good thing. “Maybe it won’t drag out so we have to look at the bad things and just get ready, get set for Utah State,” said Noce, referring to the Indians’ home game Thursday night. “I think that might be a good thing for us.” Utah St. is 112th in total offense, averaging just 280.3 ypg. They have accumulated only 229.3 ypg over their past 3 games and their 6 road game have brought just 264.5 ypg of offense. With the season virtually over, there is talk around the team that they are already beginning to look toward the future which means playing time for a lot of young players. Dennehy said that freshman redshirt Leon Jackson III will get more playing time than he has in the past. More than wins and losses, athletic director Randy Spetman said, Dennehy's firing was based on a general feeling of defeatism that he felt creeping into the program. "There are times when kids don't believe they can win anymore," Spetman said. "I think we're there a little bit…I hang around them a lot. You can sense when a person believes they are not going in the right direction. I sensed some of that." Arkansas St. fits into a very solid revenge system after getting blanked in Logan last season 49-0.
Fairfield Stags vs. Mississippi St. Bulldogs 9:15 PM ET
Fairfield Stags +11 –110 (2 Units)
This is a tough Fairfield team that returns its top eight players from last season where they finished 3rd in the MAAC. In the preseason coach’s poll, they are tied for second place with Niagara, just two points off the top spot held by Manhattan College. They are led by Deng Gai, who was named to the preaseson All-MACC first team. Gai ended last season with a 13.3 ppg and 8.8 rpg along with 66 blocks in 16 games. The other top returnees are Terrence Todd and Dewitt Maxwell who averaged 14.9 ppg and 10.9 ppg respectively. However, the strength of this team is their defense, as they finished 41st in the country last season in field goal percentage, allowing only 41% from the floor. The Stags finished second in the conference in scoring defense last year (64.2 ppg) and they held the opposition to 60 points or less 15 times in its 31 games, including four games under 56 points. The opposition reached the 70-point mark just seven times a year ago and the Stags did not allow any team to reach the 70-point mark in its final 10 contests, which will help heading into this season. They are tenacious at the defensive end of the floor and could cause a lot of problems for the young Bulldogs backcourt. Obviously, the big news is that Lawrence Roberts, the reigning SEC Player of the Year who averaged 16.9 points and 10.1 rebounds last season will not be in uniform due to a one-game suspension. Sophomore Piotr Stelmach, who averaged under a point and one rebound per game last season, is likely to start in Roberts’ place. What may hurt the Bulldogs the most here is trying to replace point guard Timmy Bowers, who was the true leader of this team. Sophomore Gary Ervin will jump into the point and will definitely find things rough going in the opener. This is an early start for the Bulldogs who need to replace two other starters along with Roberts. "We're nowhere near where we need to be," Mississippi State coach Rick Stansbury said.
