7STAR SELECTION (5% of Bankroll)
PITTSBURGH +3 over New England
The Pittsburgh Steelers are the next team to take a shot at ending the New England Patriots record winning streak, which now stands at 21 games. Ben Roethlisberger has been a rookie sensation for Pittsburgh, leading the team to 4 straight wins and a 5-1 record. Most recently, it was a 24-20 victory at Dallas in Week 6. The Patriots, meanwhile, come off a hard-fought 13-7 victory over the Jets, which helped them maintain their standing atop the AFC East and establish another NFL record with their 18th consecutive regular season victory.
Patriots QB Tom Brady was efficient as usual in his team's win over the Jets, and has worked well with his various wideouts this season. The receiving unit has been hampered by injuries, but the Patriots have scored enough points to get the win each week. The New England running game continues to impress, as running back Corey Dillon posted his second consecutive 100-yard game in the Jets win. Dillon has averaged a healthy 4.9 yards per rush, but his status for Sunday is questionable due to a thigh injury. Kevin Faulk, who rushed four times for 21 yards last week, would likely get the call if Dillon is unavailable. Despite their pass-first reputation, the Patriots rank 11th in NFL rushing offense.
The Steelers’ Roethlisberger will try to capture the same magic this week that he displayed in his last outing, when he rallied his team from a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit against Dallas to win the game. Big Ben now ranks among league leaders with a 100.1 passer rating, and has one of the best receiving groups in the NFL. The Pittsburgh line has done a good job protecting Roethlisberger, who has been sacked just seven times this season. His ability to avoid the rush and make plays on the run is another reason he hasn’t been taken down many times and why he has been so successful so early. Though most of the talk about the Steeler offense revolves around Roethlisberger, the team remains a run-first unit behind Duce Staley and Jerome Bettis. It’s been knockout 1-2 punch with Staley doing most of the work between the 10 yard lines, while “The Bus” comes in to finish the drives with goal line plunges.
Not even the Patriots can play at maximum level of effort and focus every week. All teams have their ups and downs, and Pittsburgh has a very good chance of catching New England in a flat spot here. The Patriots game last week with the Jets had a playoff-type atmosphere. It was a big divisional win against another undefeated foe, and now the motivation factor here is with the Steelers who will be out to prove themselves against the World Champions. In a limited number of opportunities, Pittsburgh is 3-0 SU & ATS as a home underdog coming off a road SU win in their last game, while the Patriots are 0-5 ATS in the reverse role, creating a nice dichotomy here favoring the home team. We also note that despite some terrific spread success recently for New England, they are 0-8 ATS on the road with another road game next before returning home.
Several PRO INFO SPORTS POWER SYSTEMS are active for this game and overall indicate a strong situation for Pittsburgh. The Patriots fall into a scenario of being a conference favorite of 3-6 points off a home favorite/pick ‘em SU win in which they failed to score at least 14 points. Such teams are 0-13 ATS going back 20 NFL seasons. In fact, New England was the last active team in this system. In Week 12 of last year, they were a 5½-point favorite at Houston, but barely escaped with a win that came by a FG in OT. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh qualifies for a couple of our stronger home underdog POWER SYSTEMS that are a combined 57-0 ATS since 1988. We don’t back a team with a rookie QB lightly against New England. It figures to be a game decided by defense and running games. With the extra rest and motivation we look for Pittsburgh to be the better team today and pull out a very close game for the SU & ATS win.
FINAL SCORE: PITTSBURGH 34 NEW ENGLAND 20
