Kansas City Chiefs at Jacksonville Jaguars 1:00 PM ET
Jacksonville Jaguars +3 -120 (2 Units)
Jacksonville is looking very forward to their return home after San Diego made the defense look like a bunch of amateurs. The defense looked soft against the run mostly due to a move in the line but that is being taken care of this week. They have been solid at home and catch a Kansas City team off a bye week after finally getting their offense on track. The off week only hurts them since they were finally able to generate some offense against the Ravens last Monday night.
The biggest question surrounding the team is what happened to the defense. The Jaguars held Pro Bowl back LaDainian Tomlinson to 56 yards on 19 carries Sunday but backup Jesse Chatman had 103 yards, including a 41-yard TD run in the fourth quarter that sealed the victory. ``It is shocking when you're out there and you see all the first downs and long runs,'' defensive end Brandon Green said. ``We're definitely not used to seeing that. But the good thing is it's something that can be fixed.'' Jacksonville believes that mental lapses are responsible for its problems and not personnel issues. If that's the case and they can eliminate those mistakes, the Jaguars should have success limiting Priest Holmes' production on the ground. Last year Jacksonville allowed Tennessee to sustain an 11-minute drive that consisted of a steady diet of RB Eddie George. Head coach Jack Del Rio laid into his team and made it clear that the players need to do a better job of playing within the scheme. The Jaguars held Baltimore RB Jamal Lewis, who rushed for over 2,000 yards last year, to 68 rushing yards and no touchdowns on 21 carries the following week. Del Rio called last week's performance against the Chargers embarrassing. It will be interesting to see how his team reacts this time. Marcus Stroud will move back to his normal defensive tackle position after playing end last week. "It ticks you off," LB Mike Peterson said. "We just watched the tape and I'm kind of fired up, wishing I could go play football now and suit up. But I can't. You just got to get ready for [Sunday]." Peterson is glad to be facing a team with an offensive-minded reputation because the Jaguars' defense, which drew rave reviews in allowing just 28 points during a 3-0 start, is anxious to redeem itself. Offensively, Jacksonville will try to keep Holmes off the field as much as possible by trying to control the clock with a steady commitment to the running game. Jacksonville wants to run early and often working against a Kansas City run defense that is one of the worst in the league. An effective running game will help the Jaguars control the clock and keep the potentially explosive Chiefs' offense on the sidelines. If Fred Taylor hits the holes with authority like he has in the past, he has the power and size to wear Kansas City down with 20-plus carries. Byron Leftwich is doing an excellent job of spreading the ball around and it has helped keep opposing defenses off balance. With Leftwich generally taking what the defense gives him, don't expect Chiefs defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham to drop seven or eight men into coverage much. For the second consecutive week, Leftwich threw for more than 300 yards. The Chiefs played their first four games against good defenses and had only seven pass plays of 20 yards or more in four games. Indianapolis came into Jacksonville and escaped with a 7-point win and at this point, the Colts offense is far superior to that of the Chiefs. It was the first game this year for Jacksonville that was decided by more than seven points.
