Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees ALCS
New York Yankees +140 (2 Units)
This is the series everyone wanted and they got it. It will be hard to duplicate what these teams did in the series last season, as it was one of the best ever. The Red Sox come in as the favorite despite not having home field advantage, as they will look to ride Curt Schilling and Pedro Martinez into the World Series. The Yankees whacked Martinez around the last two times they faced him. He started 4 games against New York this season and finished with a 5.47 ERA and allowed 6 home runs, the most he gave up to any team this year and the last 4 years for that matter. He has picked a bad time to be pitching his worst baseball – he has allowed at least 5 runs in 3 of his last 4 starts and Boston is only 1-4 in his last 5 outings. His confidence going against the Yankees is not good as Martinez called the Yankees his "daddy" and said he wished they'd "disappear." Schilling has been the ace of the staff and he hasn’t lost to New York in 2004 although he was hit hard in one of his three starts against the Yankees. All 3 of those starts came at Fenway Park so the Yankees have a chance to get to his in game one as five of Schilling's six losses this year came on the road. Tim Wakefield will start Game 4 and it will be over two weeks in between starts for him. The starting pitching of the Yankees is their biggest concern but they are pitching well at the right time. Mike Mussina, Jon Lieber and Kevin Brown all looked good against the Twins and they will be counted on to perform just as good if not better against the Red Sox. Brown was lit up in his last outing at Fenway, giving up four runs in two-thirds of an inning, but his last two starts have been significantly better. Both bullpens are tough but New York has the advantage getting to the late innings. Paul Quantrill, appearing in the first postseason of a 13-year career, showed his familiar touch in the ALDS after a ragged finish, and he could be key getting the game to Tom Gordon and Mariano Rivera. Offense is about even all around with the Yankees holding an edge in the power category. Boston is hitting .304 at home to lead to AL but they are only at .260 on the road. Both finished 1-2 in OBP and SLG percentages. Boston took the regular season series 11-8 but the Yankees won 5 of the last 6 played in New York, scoring an average of 7.8 rpg during those final two series. Even though the Red Sox won 3 more games, they only outscored New York 106-105 in the 19 games. History is on the side of New York but Boston thinks this is their season. Apparently the books do as well with New York coming in as the dog. Another seven game series is in the cards with home field being the deciding factor.
