Houston Astros vs. Atlanta Braves NLDS

    Houston Astros -135 (Series Play)

The Braves are in the postseason for the 13th consecutive year but have not fared well recently. They’ve dropped their first round series in 4 of the last 5 years and they are now the unfamiliar role as the3 underdog. This is a team on the decline while Houston is going in just the opposite direction. The Astros have never won a playoff series and this will be the 4th meeting against the Braves in the first round. Atlanta has been a Houston killer, winning 9 of the 10 playoff games they have played but they catch a Houston team that is simply on a roll. They have won 36 of 46, the second-best finish in NL history. They have also won a franchise-record 18 consecutive home games. Roger Clemens and Roy Oswalt will take the hill for Houston in their first two games. Clemens was supposed to pitch Sunday but was scratched which ended up being a blessing in disguise. He now will be pitching on normal rest as will Oswalt. This is a huge edge for the Astros as they send their two dominating pitchers out on the road where a split will give them home field advantage back and more than likely a series win. Clemens is 6-1 on the road while Oswalt is 9-6 but he has only lost twice away from home since June 12th. Since June 22nd, the Astros are 32-9 in games started by Clemens and Oswalt. The Game 3 start will likely go to Brandon Backe who pitched a gem Sunday to get Houston into this position. Houston's bullpen has been a concern area all year, but pitched well in the stretch run through the combined efforts of Dan Miceli, Chad Qualls, Chad Harville and Russ Springer. Those four, and lefty Mike Gallo, helped set things up for strikeout record-holder Brad Lidge in the closer's role. Statically, the offenses have right around the same hitting numbers but Houston is hitting better recently. They are hitting .284 over their last 10 games while the Braves are at .256 during that span. The Braves are killing lefties of late but they won’t see any coming from the Astros. Houston is hitting .281 against righties over their last 10 and they will face two in the first two games, Jaret Wright and John Thomson.

        Another wire to wire win:

Kansas City Chiefs at Baltimore Ravens 9:00 PM ET

        Kansas City Chiefs +6 –103 (2 Units)

The Chiefs enter this game at a surprising 0-3 but they are by far the best winless team in the league even if their defense hasn’t shown any improvement from last season. They have the weapons on offense to outscore anyone and while the Ravens defense will be an enormous challenge, they will get enough on the board to keep it close. Baltimore has nothing past Jamal Lewis and their offense will not be able to take advantage of the new Chiefs stop unit.

The Chiefs offense had its best game of the season last weekend, piling up 364 total yards against the Texans. Quarterback Trent Green threw his first three touchdown passes of the year while Priest Holmes, unable to walk last Monday, kicked off his ankle brace and rushed for an inspiring 134 yards. Holmes is an excellent cut back runner. The Chiefs' offensive line does an excellent job of sealing off the backside, and they may have some success in this area against the Ravens defense that over pursues at times. The Ravens have one of the league's elite defenses, but in two games this season they have given up big plays through the air. It’s a very fine line in this league and that goes double for the Chiefs. Last Sunday, Marcus Coleman's 102-yard touchdown return turned a possible 21-6 lead into a 14-all tie after the 2-point conversion. Kansas City is not the typical 0-3 team. If the Chiefs had converted two fourth-down plays, they would be 2-1. Heading into this weekend. the 0-3 teams' problems are many. But of the five, only the Chiefs were averaging more than 15.3 points per game. Only Arizona and Kansas City had a positive turnover ratio. The Chiefs defense will try and stop the run on first and second down with some blitzes and stunts. With the Ravens lacking any sort of a threat on the perimeter in the passing game, the Chiefs will use single man-to-man coverage on the perimeter. The Ravens simply lack the offensive firepower to exploit the Kansas City's defense. The Chiefs may counter by stacking eight defenders in the box to stop Lewis and play their safeties up close to force QB Kyle Boller to make plays, something he has yet to do. Boller has committed five turnovers in three games, and he's just not making good decisions. Even more alarming is that the Ravens have simplified their playbook for Boller, and they're using only about 20 percent of their plays. The much-maligned Chiefs defense stuffed the Texans offense time after time, holding Domanick Davis to 12 yards on 10 carries, sacking David Carr three times and giving up just 296 net yards. Their morale is good for a winless team. “Judging by the practice we just had, you'd never know we were 0-3,” DE Eric Hicks said. “You'd think we were 3-0. You attribute that to Coach Vermeil and the coaching staff. They always have us up and ready to go. He must be the best motivational speaker in the world because we're always up for a challenge.” This is a difficult venue to win in for visitors but Kansas City is one team that can do it. Baltimore has not beaten the Chiefs in their two previous meetings, and Kansas City is the last team to beat Baltimore at M&T Bank Stadium. “It would be fun to turn around our season on a Monday night because all the experts have probably already written us off,” coach Dick Vermeil said. “It's understandable. But I think it would be a mistake.” With a bye week coming up, they will leave everything on the field for this one.
