    SUNDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL

    DENVER -3 over Kansas City

The Mile High City will be a-buzz tonight, as the Denver Broncos take to the field to face AFC West rival Kansas City. The Broncos and Chiefs each come off playoff appearances, with Denver earning a Wild Card berth after finishing 10-6 and Kansas City winning the division with a 13-3 record.

Kansas City had the No. 1 scoring offense in the NFL last year, and running back Priest Holmes was a major reason why, rushing for 1,420 yards, scored 27 touchdowns, and also caught 74 passes out of the backfield. Former first-round pick Larry Johnson could take a few carries from Holmes after a strong training camp. The Chiefs' passing game has been damaged by preseason injuries to wideouts Johnnie Morton and Marc Boerigter, meaning Eddie Kennison and return specialist extraordinaire Dante Hall will try to step up their respective games. Tight end Tony Gonzales remains one of the top players in the league at his position. This is a matchup that favors the Broncos here, as their secondary has been bolstered by the addition of cornerback Champ Bailey and John Lynch. The pass rush will again be led by Trevor Pryce, who has 60 sacks over the past seven seasons.

The trade of Clinton Portis has thrust the spotlight on second-year running back Quentin Griffin, a shifty runner in the Barry Sanders mold. Kansas City's run defense ranked 30th in the NFL last season, and former head coach Gunther Cunningham has been brought in as defensive coordinator to try and stem the tide. Denver quarterback Jake Plummer played relatively well in his first action as a Bronco in 2003, but struggled this preseason. Two of his favorite targets - Ed McCaffrey and Shannon Sharpe - have retired, putting the focus squarely on wideouts Rod Smith and Ashley Lelie.

New starters like Griffin, Bailey, and Lynch will be the story for the Broncos here, but the team's makeup has not changed all that drastically. Denver is still strong where it counts - in the trenches - and will come into this game very sure of itself despite the new personnel. The same can't necessarily be said for the Chiefs, who will be involved in a new defensive scheme and don't have the same firepower at receiver that they did a year ago.

In what will likely be a close game, special teams are often the deciding factor. Here, again, we give a big advantage to Denver. Yes, KC has the human joystick, Dante Hall, but he will be used much more in the regular offense tonight, and doesn’t figure to be as fresh on returns. It’s in the kicking game where Denver has the decided edge, as the Chiefs will be using 2 rookies in the kicking game. This will be a lot of pressure on untested players.

Denver has historically opened very strong, as Mike Shanahan usually has his troops very sharp and in mid-season form in September. The Broncos are 8-1 ATS in their first division home game of the season. Additionally, they are 9-1 ATS at home vs. division opponents, including a perfect 8-0 on Sundays. Kansas City has struggled in the Mile High City, as they have not won there since 2000, and have not covered the spread against Denver in the last 5 games. Despite Cunningham’s presence as the new KC DC, we still expect Denver to have success running the football, which will set up some big passing plays leading to a Broncos win and cover.
