North Carolina Tar Heels at Virginia Cavilers 3:30 PM ET

    Virginia Cavaliers –22 –105 (2 Units)

The Matt Schaub era is over but the Marques Hagans era is just getting started for the Cavs. On the opposite side of the ball, things don’t look like they have changed too much for the boys in carolina blue. The Tar Heels needed a late rally to get by 1-AA William & Mary last weekend. A win is a win and that was their goal but when expectations are that low, Virginia should dominate in this rival game.

The Tar Heels, who ranked 116th out of 117 Division I-A teams in total defense last season, have gone to co-defensive coordinators this year. It doesn’t look like it has made a difference thus far. The Tar Heels allowed 442 yards by William & Mary last weekend, including 322 passing by quarterback Lang Campbell. Commenting on the defense, head coach Jim Bunting was blunt. "It was not great," he said of the defensive performance. "I didn't expect it to be." The game ended with an 88-yard touchdown drive by William & Mary -- too late to affect the game's outcome. But it was another reminder that while Carolina's defense is simplified and faster, it still has much to prove. Bunting's team had to rally from a 10-point deficit in the third quarter. Against Temple, Virginia amassed 504 yards in total offense, including 286 on the ground, and did not have a turnover. It was the third career start for Hagans, a junior who backed up record-setting quarterback Matt Schaub for most of the past two seasons. Hagans completed 17 of 22 passes for 211 yards, added 25 yards on five runs and was not sacked. Nine Cavaliers caught at least one pass against Temple.

North Carolina has a good offense with three senior starters along the offensive line, good running backs and a quality QB. The Cavs, however, believe their defense might be as good as some of the best teams in the country. While William & Mary's defense offered little challenge to Durant, the Cavs bring an altogether different package. It's better, stronger and more experienced. Temple's Walter Washington is one of the Big East's best dual threat quarterbacks and he did absolutely nothing against the Cavs D until it was over. Durant has a similar style as Washington and if the Virginia stop unit plays like it did against the Owls, the results could be just the same.

The Cavaliers may not have played a perfect game in their season opener at Temple, but there were few complaints from the coaching staff. In 2002 and 2003, the Heels won only five games and beat just one team, Arizona State, with a winning record. UNC hasn't won in Charlottesville since 1981 with Virginia going 10-2 ATS in that span.
