    Thursday’s Selection -

    PARLAY: TROY STATE +11 over Missouri/UNDER 46

The Troy State Trojans return home off a huge upset win at Marshall to find themselves heavy underdogs in Thursday's nationally televised meeting with the #19 Missouri. The Tigers are indeed one of the better teams in the Big 12 and got off to a strong start, at least offensively, with a 52-20 romp over Arkansas State in the opener last weekend. Troy State will not be a pushover by any means. Not only did the Trojans hold an explosive Thundering Herd squad to just 15 points, they did so as a 2 TD underdog. This game is very significant for the school because it marks the first time that a team from a BCS Conference is playing on the Trojans' home field.

Troy State's biggest concern from a defensive standpoint will be trying to contain Missouri’s QB, Brad Smith. The “S” in Smith might as well stand for Superman”, as he is one of the more talented QBs in the nation. He was impressive as expected in the opener against Arkansas State, as he threw for 233 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 63 yards and another score. Damien Nash is the new starting tailback behind Smith, and he certainly got off to a tremendous start with a career-high 126 yards on only 15 carries. The Tigers led the nation in fewest turnovers with 13 last season and 12 in 2002, but those things have a way of catching up with teams, and it may in 2004, as Mizzou committed two giveaways in the opener. They may get away with such carelessness at home against Arkansas State, but probably not at Troy State in this game. The Tigers do have its most athletic group of defenders in recent history, and the unit was certainly strong against the run against Arkansas State. Unfortunately, they were not nearly as effective against the Arkansas State passing attack, as the Indians completed 26-of-37 throws for 350 yards. Also concerning is that Missouri allowed the Indians to hold the ball for more than 38 minutes. The fact that the Tigers were only able to register one sack didn't help.

Last season, the Trojan offense was simply horrendous, ranking 111th in the nation with an average of 294 total ypg. Considering that the unit managed only 17 points and 261 yards of total offense in the opener against Marshall, there are, no doubt, still some problems in need of a solution. QB Aaron Leak completed 12-of-26 passes for 196 yards and threw one pick without tossing a touchdown. He was not much of a threat running after injuring his ankle but he did open the game's scoring with a 15-yard scoring jaunt. Leak is looking to make great strides from last year, as he completed less than 43 percent of his throws with five touchdowns against 12 interceptions. Things are much brighter for the Trojans on the other side of the ball. They ranked a respectable 39th in the nation in total defense a year ago, thanks in large part to the fact that the squad allowed only 125 ypg on the ground. Nine starters are back from that squad, and the unit was sensational against the high-scoring Thundering Herd of Marshall in the opener. In that tilt, the Trojans surrendered a total of only 25 rushing yards, and that stat was aided tremendously by the fact that the squad finished with eight sacks. When Marshall was able to get a pass off, it completed only half of its attempts against the swarming Troy State defense. The Trojans forced a pair of turnovers and allowed only 11 first downs. Such play and winning the game at such a tough site like Marshall should be a tremendous confidence boost for Troy.

It's not a stretch to say that this is the biggest game in Troy history. The Tigers have been tested and beaten before by non-BCS clubs before and a let down here could be lethal. The Trojans defense really is good enough to test Missouri, who is going to be in for a bit of a surprise against this powerful and experienced group. Troy's win was only the seventh home loss for Marshall since its stadium opened in 1991, and Marshall's first season-opening loss since 1977. Their performance has gotten the attention of the Tigers' Pinkel. What caught most of his attention was the play of the Troy defensive line and senior end Demarcus Ware. The defense held Marshall to its least amount of points since 1991 and did it with tremendous pressure on the quarterback. The Missouri offensive line will outweigh the Trojan D-line by some 40+ pounds which would normally give us great concern; however, Troy manhandled the Herd’s line last week, which is even slightly bigger and is more experienced than the Tigers.

Controlling the defense will be only a part of the Tigers' challenge. Troy's offense proved it could put up numbers even in adverse conditions. QB Leak is a fifth-year senior now and runs an offense similar to Arkansas State's that gave Mizzou fits last week. The Trojans like to spread the field with the pass. After the Tigers allowed 350 passing yards to the Indians last Saturday, the Trojans see an opportunity to exploit a defense that might still be a little shell-shocked.

Troy expects to sell out its 30,000-seat stadium and have people all over Alabama pack sports bars to watch the action. They have a tremendous home field advantage, suffering only one loss there in the past several seasons, and that was in OT. They are 13-0 all time in home openers, and have lost only 8 total out of their last 68 here. Another upset is certainly a possibility here, and they should certainly be able to stay within single digits of Missouri at home and under these conditions.

If Troy can hang with Missouri, it will be with their defense, as the offense simply won’t be to keep up if the game develops into a shootout, therefore a small parlay on the Trojans plus the points and the under makes perfect sense here. It’s a way to win the side and total wagers, while risking only one wager. If your sportsbooks do not offer an over/under line on this game, then the play would be simply on Troy State to cover the spread against Missouri.

FINAL SCORE: TROY STATE 24 MISSOURI 14

yet another long "beat your own drum" promo without---yes without the comp play as requested....I have remminded you several times, including yesterday, what the rules are...

Why should you be offered a different set of rules---better still,--why do you insist on breaking them...

The Moderators at some point will catch up to your indifference to the rules....Hopefully give you an ultimatum---supply one, or not be allowed to promote your wares "sing your song"...

I'll ask you one more time, politely, where is the comp---a bunch of back ones past due---do you intend to comply???

Everyone else does, you're no different...kmann
