    Monday's client-only OPINION SELECTION:

    LOUISIANA TECH -4½ over Nevada

It’s a case of the old and the new with Nevada and their head coach in 2004 as Chris Ault returns to pace the same sidelines he left several years ago. He and the Wolfpack jump right into their Western Athletic Conference schedule with a tough meeting on the road against Louisiana Tech. The nationally televised event will put Ault right back into the spotlight as he begins his third stint as the top man in Reno. After Nevada produced a record of just 6-6 last season, Ault used his powers as the school’s athletic director and dumped Chris Tormey. He then appointed himself to the head coaching position. As for the Bulldogs, they too had a rough year after having picked up the conference title in their first season in the WAC back in 2001. Head coach Jack Bicknell was only able to manage a record of 5-7 overall with his team.

Right off the top the Wolf Pack have several on-field and off-field issues to deal with, starting with senior running back Chance Kretschmer being doubtful for this contest with a knee injury. Kretschmer led the nation in rushing as a freshman, but suffered a season-ending knee injury a couple of years back, and now is suffering from another knee ailment. More of the offensive burden will fall on QB Andy Heiser. He may be a senior, but that doesn't mean that he has a lot of game experience. Last year Heiser appeared in all 12 games, but completed just half of his passes, and nearly threw as many interceptions as TDs. The Pack defense is without their top 2 tacklers from last year, leaving a gaping hold in the line. They also lost their top 2 linebackers, and 3 of the 4 defensive backs that were expected to comprise the starting secondary. Needless to say, the defense will be a major issue for Nevada.

The biggest issue for the Bulldogs this season will be replacing quarterback Luke McCown who took nearly every snap for the squad last season, passing for well over 3000 yards. The starting QB position had been completely up for grabs until the beginning of last week when junior Matt Kubik was given the keys to the team, although Donald Allen will get some snaps behind center as well. After setting numerous Tech records last year, Ryan Moats is firmly entrenched at the running back spot for the Bulldogs, having gained 1,300 yards and scoring 10 touchdowns in 2003 and being the top returning running back in the WAC. Gone are the top three receivers from a year ago, but since the team has often run with sets that include as many as five wideouts, there are already plenty of players with game experience ready to take the field. Protecting the skill players will be all five returning starters on the front line for the Bulldogs. The group averages close to 300 lbs each, and they should have their way against the weak and inexperienced Nevada defensive line. New La Tech defensive coordinator Tim Rose will have his hands full trying to turn around one of the more disappointing aspects of the Bulldogs, namely the defense. Rose has decided to change the unit to a 3-4 front, which may take a few games for the defenders to learn the system, but he does have 8 starters returning to work with.

Eventually, Ault's offense should be able to put up huge numbers for Nevada when it's running well against average defenses, but it requires timing to work at its best. It's asking a lot for the precision passing game to be sharp in the season opener, especially without Kretschmer. Playing a season opener on national TV in a muggy swap won’t help either. Neither will a start time of High Noon, which is 10 AM local time for the Wolfpack.

Ryan Moats had his way against Nevada last year, running for nearly 200 yards, and with the match-up up front, there’s no reason why he can’t have an even better showing here. Nevada has not been a strong road team in conference play, losing all such games when installed as a clear underdog of more than 1 point. Ultimately, we give the edge here to Louisiana Tech, as we project them to beat Nevada by more than a TD in a spread-covering victory.

FINAL SCORE: LOUISIANA TECH 38 NEVADA 21

GAME NOTES: We couldn't have been more accurate if we had written this after the game. As noted, Nevada was still snoozing for kickoff at 10AM their time, as they fell behind 21-0 in the first half. As predited, Moats would have an even bigger day than last time when he finished with 199 yards. This time he rushed for 257 yards. Why? Again, as noted, the massive, experienced Lousiana Tech line was too much for the weak and inexperieneced Nevada D-line. We also warned that the defense would be the major issue for the Wolfpack, which it was as they surrendered one big play after the next, allowing the Bulldogs to score 38 points.
