While our Saturday OPINION SELECTION was spoiled by the 49ers tying the game with less than 30 seconds remaining in the half, our top-rated plays once again were winners:
7 STAR SELECTION (5% of Bankroll)
Washington +2 over MIAMI
The Miami Dolphins and Washington Redskins will face off at Pro Player Stadium in NFL preseason play on Saturday. The host “Fish” will be looking to build upon a 16-5 victory over Jacksonville in their preseason debut last Saturday. Without running back Ricky Williams, who retired prior to training camp, Dave Wannstedt's team emphasized the passing game. Quarterbacks Jay Fiedler and A.J. Feeley, who are locked in a battle for the starting signal-caller's job, both played well as did third-stringer Sage Rosenfels. The running game was slower in Williams' absence, as Travis Minor had 5 carries for 0 yards and Sammy Morris on gained 12 yards on 6 carries. The Redskins have thus far split a pair of preseason contests, dropping a 23-20 overtime decision to defending NFC champion Carolina in their most recent action this past Saturday. Neither Mark Brunell nor Patrick Ramsey did anything to lock up top signal-caller status.
QB Feeley does not seem quite ready to be the starter in Miami. He was not sharp in recent drills and he appeared to have trouble gripping the ball and fired several wobbly passes. At one point, Feeley fumbled while attempting a pass. This has all become a regular occurrence. Huge problems are threatening to envelop this team. After Williams retired, WR David Boston when down with an injury and is lost for the season as well. This has quickly become an injury-ravaged team. Those setbacks - particularly the loss of Williams and Boston - have left the Dolphins with a young, unproven offense. None of Saturday's starters is older than 27 and 5 of the 11 projected offensive starters have never started a regular-season game for the Dolphins. It's no surprise that against Jacksonville, the Dolphins failed to score a touchdown until the final 3 minutes. Practice two days later looked even worse. There were at least six dropped passes and one fumbled snap, along with frequent confusion at the line about the call. Coaches had to slow the pace of installing new wrinkles into the offense this week. Feeley acknowledged that the Dolphins are still struggling to mesh. ``We've had some big setbacks with personnel,'' he said.
The secondary is a complete disaster. S Shawn Wooden, CB Sam Madison, S Chris Atkins, CB Will Poole, CB Korey Banks, and CB Patrick Surtain are all OUT. In fact, Miami will have only three CBs to play in the entire game — Reggie Howard, Kevin Millhouse and Jimmy Wyrick, who was signed just Wednesday. "We're lean," Wannstedt admitted. "Where it's really going to show up is against their nickel set. We don't have a second-team nickel, so we're going to have to have linebackers in there playing against wide receivers, which we would never do in a game but I'm not going to worry about it."
The Dolphins aren’t the only team here trying to make a choice between QBs. Gibbs will again give his signal callers chances to perform well so he can find out who will be his starter in the regular season. The Redskins will have perhaps the deepest trio of QBs going here with Patrick Ramsey, Mark Brunell, and Tim Hasselbeck, Brunell has taken the early lead but we expect all of the ‘Skins throwers here to be able to take advantage of the decimated Miami secondary, especially late when the same CBs are exhausted from being on the field all night, and the LBs aren’t able to keep up with much faster WRs. This situation creates a huge mismatch in Washington’s favor.
In looking at some numbers here, we find some impressive figures. The Redskins are 13-3 ATS on the road with a pointspread of +3 to -3, while Miami is a horrendous 1-11-2 ATS as favorite of less than 3 points. We also have 2 of our stronger preseason systems active for this contest. Week 2 road teams off less than 7 SU wins in the previous regular season are an amazing 15-2 ATS vs. opponents off 7+ SU wins in the previous regular season, and Week 2 road teams off a SU loss of 3 points are 9-2 ATS. Combining these numbers with the on-field matchups make Washington a very solid play to beat the Dolphins SU and easily cover the spread.
ACTUAL FINAL SCORE: WASHINGTON 17 MIAMI 0
6 STAR SELECTION (4.75% of Bankroll)
CLEVELAND -3 over Detroit
Jeff Garcia and Kellen Winslow make their home debuts in Cleveland uniforms on Saturday afternoon when the Browns host Detroit. Garcia is the new QB in Cleveland after starting five seasons with the 49ers. No doubt he’ll be looking to connect with Winslow, the first-round draft pick out of Miami, Florida, who is expected to make an immediate impact from his tight end position. The Browns stumbled badly last week with a 24-3 loss at Tennessee. The starters played sparingly but should play nearly all of the first half in this week's contest.
The Lions started their preseason on a stronger note, barely surviving against Pittsburgh, 27-21, last Saturday. QB Joey Harrington had a nice outing for Detroit and will again be relieved by Mike McMahon and Rick Mirer. Running back and first-round draft pick Kevin Jones, who sat out against Pittsburgh with a strained hamstring, may play a few snaps here, although he is still quite unfamiliar with the offense and his responsibilities on pass plays.
The Lions have lost 24 straight on the road. They would love to get steal one anywhere they can, but HC Mariucci is not placing a high priority on this game. It never hurts to win — anywhere — but winning in the exhibition season doesn’t have any carry-over. The Lions won at Indianapolis in 2001 and started the season with 12 straight losses. It won’t be until the next game — at Baltimore — that Mariucci will start working on the practice plan for road games. When they resume practice Monday, they’ll be in their regular-season routine. That calls for one practice in the afternoon, with no morning practices. “Next week, we’ll have more of an in-season routine that prepares us to game-plan and put a book together,” Mariucci said earlier this week. “It’s kind of a dress rehearsal. It’s a dry run for the week, game week”, he added, referring to next week’s contest.
Meanwhile, Cleveland is taking this game quite seriously. There was a decided sense of urgency in the Browns camp this week to improve their play after embarrassing themselves in Nashville a week ago. “We're not going to kid ourselves," Garcia said. "We need to be a much better football team. It doesn't matter that it's preseason or anything like that. There's a lot more this team has to offer." HC Davis will let Garcia play most, if not all of the first half, and he has been game planning for the Lions, a sure sign of a coach hungry for a victory. Generally, a win in the preseason allows a coach to feel zero pressure the following week, and he can look at players. A loss, on the other hand, may mean negative press and questions at training camp. This may lead to a coach going for a win the following week. This is exactly what has been going on in Cleveland this week. The Browns were humiliated by the Titans, and now they have had a fire lit under them.
The Lions will lumber in carrying the baggage of an 0-7 spread mark when coming off a preseason SU & ATS victory. We also have a system active here, as Week 2 home teams that had less than 7 wins in the previous season are 9-2 ATS vs. opponents also off a season with fewer than 7 wins. Look for Cleveland to come out feisty and aggressive and for Jeff Garcia to make some plays in and out of the pocket as he gets more active in making something positive happen for his new club and starts them on their way to a SU & ATS win here against Detroit.
