FLORIDA MARLINS VISIT SAN DIEGO PADRES
SATURDAY AUGUST 21 AT 10:05 EST

The injury plagued yet disappointing Florida Marlins who are eight games out of first place in the NL East visit the pathetic Arizona Diamondbacks. The defending World Champion Marlins have faded so much at late that they are struggling to be in contention for a wild card spot as they have sunk to playing .500 baseball. The Padres playing in the NL West continue to flirt with the wild card and at the time of this writing are nine games over the five hundred barrier. World Series MVP Josh Beckett will pitch for the fish and this has been a memorable year for him for all the wrong reasons. Because of injuries he has started only 17 games and pitched less than 100 innings. With a 4-7 record and an ERA of 4.34 he has gone from making a great impression last year to mediocrity. When he’s right he has a 93-97 mile an hour fastball that is overpowering, and can go late into the game with regularity. At the end of last year when he peaked his big high overhand curve was registering strikes on a regular basis. Beckett is extremely competitive and because of this can be very hard on himself, and has shown a tendency to break under adversity.
Beckett’s mound opponent Brandon Webb has as much talent as anyone in the majors. His sinker can be so good that hitters have trouble even when then know it is coming. He throws it in the low 90’s with live, late action that makes it difficult to elevate and thus creates many groundballs. Webb has faced two problems this year that are the reason for the horrible 4-14 record with a better than average 3.81 ERA. He has lost his ability to consistently put the ball over the plate, walking 91 batters while striking out 116. His WHIP is 1.54 and he has lost six games where the hapless D-Backs have scored two runs or less. Arizona has scored the third least amount of runs per game in the majors with an average under four per outing.
RED ZONE SPORTS does believe Josh Beckett is struggling, but his margin for error is so much greater than that of Brandon Webb, that we can in no way support the Diamondbacks. Take the Marlins to win Saturday evening in a game that could be close, but no cigar for Arizona. Florida wins!:D
