    Thursday’s Money Play -

7 STAR SELECTION (5% of Bankroll)

    CAROLINA -3 over NY Giants

New York Giants rookie Eli Manning gets his baptism as an NFL starter on Thursday night, as the #1 draft pick leads his team to Charlotte to face the defending NFC champion Carolina Panthers. Manning is battling Kurt Warner for the QB job in New York and is expected to see time in the first half before yielding to Warner in the 2nd quarter and third-stringer Jesse Palmer in the second half. Giants head coach Tom Coughlin will also be looking for continued strong play from running back Ron Dayne. The former Heisman Trophy winner rushed for 118 yards and a pair of touchdowns in last week's 34-24 win over Kansas City. Starting running back Tiki Barber, who rushed for 20 yards on four carries, could see more considerable time in the team's second preseason tune-up.

The Panthers also come off a victory, as they opened the preseason slate with a 23-20 overtime victory at Washington last Saturday. Among the most pleasant surprises for Jon Fox's team was the play of wide receiver and second-round draft pick Keary Colbert, who caught three passes for 131 yards, including touchdowns of 42 and 68 yards. The only QB question in Carolina is who will be #2? Rodney Peete and Chris Weinke are battling for the job behind Jake Delhomme.

To be honest, the victory in Tom Coughlin's preseason debut as the Giants coach wasn't pretty. Trent Green and the Chiefs gained 311 first-half yards and scored on four of five possessions in shredding the Giants' rebuilding defense. If they'd stayed in, the game would not have been close. Unfortunately for New York, the Panthers first team will play the entire first half in this game. While Carolina is not nearly as explosive on offense as KC, they should be able to pretty much have their way here. The big questions coming into the preseason for the NFC champs was how would the new offensive line and defensive backfield perform? It’s still early, but Coach Fox said he was pleased for the most part with the way his revamped O-line played at Washington. The rebuilt secondary is also off to a decent start, as Washington quarterbacks Patrick Ramsey, Mark Brunell and Tim Hasselbeck combined to complete just 16 of 41 passes.

Now, they will get their first look at Eli Manning. Former Giant Jessie Armstead said the Panthers won’t take it easy on Manning. "He has to learn how to adjust to the NFL," Armstead warned. Manning was 7-13 for 91 yards against the Chiefs second-stringers. Playing the Panther’s first-stringers on the road is a huge step up in class. He will be in simple survival mode here. Manning and the other Giants QBs were bailed out last week by the running game. Those holes in the defense that Ron Dayne ran through will mysteriously disappear on Thursday, putting more pressure on the passing game. Don’t be surprised to see Manning get pulled early to keep him alive for the regular season. Following Manning will be Kurt Warner who did nothing last week and likely won’t this week, and then Jesse Palmer and possibly Ryan Van Dyke.

This compares to the Carolina QB rotation of Jake Delhomme for a half, then Chris Weinke and Rodney Peete in the second half, and possibly rookie Rod Rutherford. We’ll certainly take our chances with this proven group, especially with the mess the Giants are in on defense. All three starting linebackers - Carlos Emmons, Nick Greisen and Barrett Green have had to sit out recent practices - and Quincy Monk, who is expected to start in the middle for Greisen, was out of a recent practice with a virus. It could well be the Panthers backs who are running wild in this game, as Carolina features double-barrel action from Stephen Davis and DeShaun Foster. Facing an inexperienced linebacking group, they could see lots of daylight to run to and through.

Even if New York can manage to keep the game close, the edge is once again with Carolina. They have reliable John Kasay who kicked a 52-yarder to win last week’s game. Meanwhile, the Giants place-kicker Bill Gramatica suffered back spasms this week and his status uncertain. If he can’t go, free agent Todd France will kick. France, a product of the University of Toledo, was in the Vikings camp the last two years. Gramatica handled all the field goals and extra points in the preseason opener against the Chiefs.

It’s not like New York has been the crispest team in the league in training camp, either. HC Coughlin let the Giants have it with both barrels on Monday morning after a slow start to practice. Coughlin warned the players that they face humiliation on national TV Thursday night. He was furious with the lack of intensity and attention to detail, and said the way they were practicing and playing they couldn't beat a high school team.

He could very well be a good predictor. Carolina holds a 3-0 lead in the all-time preseason series, including last year's 20-10 victory at Giants Stadium. The Panthers are 2-0 against New York in the regular season, winning the last meeting, 37-24, in the 2003 regular season finale. Fox is a former Giants assistant and obviously enjoys beating the team that let him get away.

We have some absolutely frightening preseason numbers to look at here. New York is 1-10-1 ATS off a SU win, 4-22-1 ATS when their winning percentage is .333% or better, and just 6-20 ATS on less than 7 days rest. Meanwhile, Carolina is 5-0-1 ATS off a SU underdog win, 6-1 ATS when 100%, and a sizzling 11-0 ATS after their dog win last week in D.C. We also note that Fox is 7-1-1 ATS overall. Under Fox, the Panthers have won and covered their last 6 preseason games, and we aren’t about to step in front of that streaking train.

ACTUAL FINAL SCORE: CAROLINA 27 NY GIANTS 20
