Some may look at this as double-revenge for a Seattle team – and ex-Green Bay head coach Mike Holmgren -- that lost an ugly regular-season performance at Green Bay last season, then lost on an INT return in OT in their January return to Lambeau Field. But for a team with NFC Championship intentions, getting all worked up for the first pre-season game wouldn’t make sense. The Seahawks have plenty of re-tooling to do along the defensive front seven, and the Packers own one of the league’s best running games. Naturally, stud Ahman Green won’t see most of the action in the backfield, but Packer backers were clamoring for the team to keep Najeh Davenport in the off-season, and they did. Green Bay also has Tim Couch at QB. A regular-season bust, Couch nevertheless has a better OL, RB and WR situation to support him than he had in Cleveland a year ago. Against a defense as soft as Seattle’s, and with teammate Bret Favre as a personal measuring stick, Couch has a chance to throw for three TDs in this game as he attempts to revive his reputation. In prior pre-seasons, the Green Bay back-up has been the awful Doug Pederson, or a combination of Pederson and another stiff. At least Couch has plenty of real NFL game experience, and a need to get reps in the new offense as Favre becomes more brittle with age. Green Bay’s defense takes the field with the motivation of playing for a new coordinator. Under Ed Donatell, they claimed to be put in bad positions which led to big plays against them. It’s a better pre-season angle than it will be when the real games begin. GREEN BAY, 31-13.
