ST LOUIS CARDINALS VISIT ATLANTA BRAVES
1:05 EST SATURDAY 8/14/04
Cardinals lead the AL Central and the Braves lead the AL East. The difference is the Cards lead by twelve and a half or more than twice as much as the Braves, and have won ten more games. This game brings out two of the better pitchers in the NL if not major league baseball. Marquis is 12-4 with a 3.58 ERA and Ortiz is 13-6 with an ERA of 3.22. Card's Marquis is one of the premier arms in MLB. He has the total overall ability to emerge as an outstanding power pitcher with a fastball in the 94-96 range, a hard slider and a modest changeup. He mixes his pitches well, and his problems previously have centered around his lack of control. He appears to have this conquered so far with 45 walks in 138 innings and a 1.42 WHIP.
Ortiz is one of the few pitchers today who can get by by working up in the strike zone. He doesn't have a signature pitch, and his stuff will not blow away hitters, with a 92-94 fastball and a hard breaking curve. Yet he is stubborn and calculating on the mound and refuses to give into to hitters, risking a walk rather than give them the pitch they are waiting for. Last year he lead the NL in walks and is currently ranked second, but is also second in wins. To his credit he has gone at least six innings in 132 of his 172 career starts.
Few teams can combine the good pitching with good hitting the way this years edition of the Cardinals do. Thus the reason for them to have a better road record (37-17) than the Braves home record of 30-23. Stick with your boys from RED ZONE SPORTS and take the Cardinals to win a very good baseball game Saturday afternoon. St Louis wins!
