Handicapping the NFL Preseason - Part 5
MOTIVATION - PRO INFO SPORTS considers each teams' drive and desire. We look at those teams who really have nothing to prove. Teams that are already set for the upcoming season really don’t want to go all out during the preseason, so these squads can be very profitable bet-against teams. Usually when a team did well the previous year they will have much less to prove than a team that was 2-14. The team that was 2-14 may try real hard to break the losing pattern by starting their year off with some wins. For this reason, the bad clubs are usually good wagers in the preseason. We also prefer to invest in younger teams. Younger players simply play harder in the preseason than do the veterans. The vets have already established their abilities and do not like to risk injury. The young guys are often fighting to make a name for themselves and tend to play with a higher level of intensity.
It is a pretty good general rule of thumb that teams off humiliating losses will come out with vengeance the following week; however, final scores can be deceptive in any and all sports but such is the case even more so in preseason football. If a team loses 28-7 but the first and second teams were outscored 21-0, while the mop-up guys played evenly, it is a huge difference than if it were vice-versa. If totally outplayed, the third and fourth stringers are digging ditches and contacting the Barcelona Dragons but if it were the primary players who were humiliated, they are the ones who have a fire lit under them. It is much more important to look at how the respective top two units played than the actual final score. One must certainly take into account all the extenuating factors involved entering a game. Perhaps a team's top two units were shorthanded against an opponent who used complicated schemes breaking in new systems. We do look for teams whose first and second units got a good old-fashioned no-excuses butt whipping to rebound strongly.
Last year's stats show us what each team needs in order to improve. Last year's worst running teams, for example, are very likely to do a lot of running during this year's preseason; last year's worst passing teams are very likely to do a lot of passing. If a team's offensive line let them down last year, we can expect a lot of personnel shifting and experimenting on the offensive line. If their deep pass defense was shaky last year, look for a lot of new ideas and new players in their secondary. If they had trouble stopping a rushing game last year, look for new people on the defensive line, or even new styles of defense. Just as important, teams with last year's best offensive lines don't figure to overwork their first string linemen in an exhibition game. Why do that? If their starting linemen are more-or-less predetermined, why would a coach risk undue injury to those locked-in starters? Isn't it smarter to develop depth by playing backup players? If a team's passing attack got them into the playoffs last year, why risk injury to their predetermined receivers? Past stats can often actually work in reverse during the preseason. Teams famous for defense can be involved in very high-scoring exhibition games and, conversely, teams famous for high-scoring shoot-outs can be involved in defensive standoffs. Passing teams can suddenly become running teams, running teams can suddenly become passing teams, etc. Everything can seem inconsistent, illogical, and backwards to the unprepared and uninformed handicapper.
