Free Card for Friday February 7, 2003
Dartmouth +16.5 (2 Units)
We see a tighter game that most people would expect here. Yale could be peeking ahead to their game with rival Harvard on Saturday and very well might not show a completely focused effort. While Dartmouth has lost their last 8 games, they have been competitive in 5 of them, losing 4 of those by 5 points or less. Yale is on a modest 2 game winning streak after defeating Cornell and Columbia last weekend. Prior to that, they had lost 7 of their last 8 games including home losses to Brown and Rhode Island. Both of these teams rely on strong defense as they are keeping opponents to under 44% shooting and 68 ppg. However Yale is allowing 75 ppg at home, which should improve the Big Green’s offensive production as they are scoring under 60 ppg. Look for a tight game throughout with Yale pulling out a close one at the end.
Rider E (3 Units)
Rider is starting to play basketball like they were expected to play all season long. They have won 4 of their last 5 games after starting the season 5-10. They were picked by some to repeat as MAAC champions but that is out of the question at this point, so now is a good time to peak to get ready for conference tournament time. The guard tandem of Jerry Johnson and Robert Taylor are playing great basketball now. They are averaging a combined 30.4 ppg and 5.7 apg. St. Peter’s is led by freshman Keydren Clark, who is averaging 24.2 ppg but after that, no one is scoring in double figures. The problem for the Peacocks has been their defense. They allow 76 ppg and over 47% shooting. Rider is only scoring 66.8 ppg on the season, but they have picked that up as of late as they are averaging nearly 75 ppg in their last 5. St. Peter’s has lost 7 of their last 9 games with both wins coming against Loyola-Maryland, who is 4-15 on the season. Rider is playing much better ball right now and should get the easy win.
