TEXAS RANGERS @ HOUSTON ASTROS
SAT JULY 3RD @ 7:05 EST
In an interleague contest the Astros host a Texas Ranger team that is
atop the AL West divison by two and a half games at the time of this
writing. Houston meanwhile is in 4th in the NL Central a full five
games out of the top spot. RED ZONE SPORTS sees this as a game that
the Rangers will be small favorite despite sending an untested pitcher
to the mound. You'll see little used Nick Bierbondt, who has pitched
only 13 total innings this season, and that includes three starts, and
one in which he went six innings. Nick's problem is he has one and a
half times as many walks as he has strikeouts, and puts runners in
scoring position with out any hits too frequently. Opponents are
hitting him at a .320 rate and Bierbrondt has a fat 7.04 ERA on the
road.
His mound opponent Tim Redding has had anything but a stellar 2004
season. This is a pitcher who has as good a stuff as any thrower in
the Astro organization. He has an exceptional four and two seam
fastball, plus a wicked curve and slider. His fastball is in the 92-94
range, and the hard breaking curve starts at the shoulder and ends at
the knees. Tim is developing slider that can be very good at times,
and he has been working on a changeup. Redding has been getting better
at changing speeds and moving the ball around.
You may ask if he is this good why is he 3-6. It's all between his
ears and staying the course under adversity. With men on base his
opponent's batting average raises to well over three hundred and he has
a tendency to aim is pitches. Still he has has two good outings in his
last five, and with the addition of Carlos Beltrane, the Astros now
have someone who will keep foes from giving Craig Biggio nothing to
hit. RED ZONE SPORTS loves the Houston Astros in this one for many
reason, not the least the fact that they are 14-7 versu left hand
pitching this year. Take Houston and win Saturday evening.
