The Blazers come in tied for 1st place in the Northern Division of CUSA and with this being by far the weaker of the two divisions, they are already in good shape. Their next three games are all very winnable before their matchup against Memphis in two weeks. The Golden Eagles have lost their last 5 games by an average of 14 ppg that includes a 13-point loss at UAB back in January. While it’s always difficult to beat the same team twice in a season, Southern Miss has not played well at all as of late. Their defense has allowed over 50% shooting and 46% three-point shooting during their losing streak and will be difficult to overcome. On offense, they are shooting just 40% in their last 5 and are shooting an atrocious 23% from behind the arc at home (11 games). UAB has struggled shooting the three-ball where they are hitting just 26% in their last 5 but make up for it by shooting 41% on the road. They have also improved their free throw shooting to 72% while the Golden Eagles have slipped to 65% from the stripe. Guard Morris Finley is the go to guy for the Blazers on offense, leading the team in scoring and he is second on the team in assists. He may be small at 5-11 but along with Eric Bush, they lead the defense that has 211 steals (12.4 pg) compared to just 125 for Southern Miss (6.9 pg). The Blazers force nearly 23 turnovers per game while allowing just 13 assists per game, right around the average of Southern Miss. UAB is 3-1 in their last 4 road games straight up and are 5-1 ATS away from home for the season. The motivation of keeping a hold on first place should be incentive enough to pull off the win in Hattiesburg.
