Montreal Expos (Ohka) at Cincinnati Reds (Wilson) 7:10 PM ET
Montreal Expos (Ohka) +146 (2 Units)
The Expos' hottest pitcher, Tomo Ohka had a perfect May (3-0, 1.51 ERA) allowing only six earned runs in 35.2 innings. He beat Cincinnati, 6-2, his last time out, throwing 6.2 innings of eight-hit ball. He has always pitched well against the Reds, going 3-0 with a 0.87 ERA in 3 career starts. That includes a 0.65 ERA at Cincinnati in his two starts there. He has allowed 3 earned runs or less in 9 of his 10 starts this season. Paul Wilson brings his 7-0 record onto the field as he will be pitching for the first time since May 25th due to a strained right groin. Wilson has pitched much better over his last 4 starts (1.55 ERA) compared to his previous 4 before that (7.59 ERA). Based on that inconsistency, we don’t know which pitcher shows up today. We do know that a groin problem is hard to get rid of and he will more than likely be affected. His 4-0 record and 1.24 ERA at Great American gives us a lot of value here. If he remains healthy, Wilson and Ohka should go toe to toe in this pitching duel. The Expos are actually hitting the ball better than the Reds over the last couple weeks. They are hitting .251 their last 10 games while Cincinnati is hitting .246 including a .239 average at home. The return of Nick Johnson has coincided with these numbers. Johnson had three hits Friday and is now hitting .400 (10-for-25) since coming off the DL.
Houston Astros (Redding) at St. Louis Cardinals (Marquis) 7:15 PM ET
Houston Astros (Redding) +111 (2 Units)
Tim Redding will make his third start against the Cardinals this year with hopes to get the results he did on May 30 in Houston, when the right-hander threw 7.1 shutout innings vs. St. Louis in a 7-1 win. Redding allowed just four singles and struck out four before being pulled with one out in the eighth and the Astros ahead 3-0. He threw the ball with confidence and looked relaxed while inducing 14 groundouts with his hard fastball and an effective slider. Redding ended the month of May with a 3-0 record and a 2.62 ERA, outpitching his bigger name teammates Roy Oswalt and Wade Miller. He is 3-0 with a 1.74 ERA in his past five starts and he has a 3.13 ERA on the road in his 4 starts away from home. Jason Marquis ended a mini-skid with an ok outing on Monday against the Pirates but he did allow a season high 10 hits. He has given up at least 7 hits in 5 of his last 6 starts, posting a 4.63 ERA and a 1.62 WHIP throughout those 6 starts. St. Louis pitchers have allowed 65 homers, second most in the National League. Don’t expect to see Jason Isringhausen if a save situation does arise tonight. He has pitched the last 3 nights, including a 2-inning stint on Thursday. The Astros are the second highest scoring team in the league at 5.2 runs per game and they have the second most hits in the league at 9.8 per game. The Astros lost the opener last night despite outhitting the Cardinals 10-6.
Los Angeles Dodgers (Perez) at Arizona Diamondbacks (Gonzalez) 10:05 PM ET
Los Angeles Dodgers (Perez) –1.5 +100 (2 Units)
Odalis Perez returns to the hill after missing his last start with a strained right hip. He has allowed 3 or less runs in his last 7 starts, posting a 2.63 ERA in that span. The Dodgers are just 4-3 in those games however. Perez has been the tough-luck Dodger, with six no-decisions and nine quality starts out of 11 so he will keep them in this game with his arm and hope the offense comes around for him. Perez is just one of the Dodgers starters that have produced recently. The starters had posted a combined 2.46 ERA in their last 12 games, only 1.19 over the previous eight games. This was Casey Daigle's spot in the rotation, but the right-hander was optioned to Tucson earlier in the week. Enter Edgar Gonzalez, a 21-year old righty who was just called up. Gonzalez has gone 2-5 with a 5.68 ERA in nine starts with Triple-A Tucson thus far so he wasn’t lighting up AAA by any stretch. With Gonzalez getting the call, it would likely mean the most he would go Saturday would be five innings, leaving four innings for the bullpen. That bullpen ranks 28th in baseball with a 4.85 ERA. The Dodgers have won 5 of their last 6 games after losing 12 of their previous 14 games. Milton Bradley is appealing his suspension and will continue to play until that appeal has been ruled upon. Arizona is 5-14 against lefty starters this season.
Cleveland Indians (Dawley) at Anaheim Angels (Lackey) 10:05 PM ET
Over 9.5 Cleveland/Anaheim –115 (2 Units)
Two struggling pitchers take the hill on Saturday against two offenses that are hitting a combined .302 against right handed pitching their last 10 games. The Indians are looking for some help in the No. 5 spot in the rotation, and Joe Dawley will get another chance to show he's their guy. He also hopes to improve on an unimpressive debut with the Indians on May 29 against the A's. In that start, he was roughed up for three runs on four hits with five walks and four strikeouts. He took a no decision. Control is an issue. After getting the first two A's in the second, Dawley ran into big-time control problems by walking four straight. John Lackey suffered the worst defeat of his season and the worst defeat of the Angels' pitching staff this season when he gave up eight earned runs in three innings in an 11-2 loss in Chicago last week. Nearly 2/3 of the Indians' games (33 of 50) have been decided by three runs or less. Chances are that if the Angels score like they should, Cleveland will follow suit. The Indians are in the middle of another one their many streaks this season. An offense that has shown an ability to score early has pushed the winning streaks. The worst bullpen in the big leagues has fueled the losing streaks. Anaheim continues to hit despite their numerous injuries. They have won 6 of their last 7 at home by averaging 6.3 rpg.
