    The Cubs and Pirates hook up for a doubleheader in Pittsburgh. The pitching matchup in Game One features Matt Clement of the Cubs versus Kip Wells of the Pirates. Clement (14-12, 4.11 ERA in 2003) is off to a fine start this year, going 6-3 with a 2.69 ERA in his first nine starts. He has allowed 18 runs on 41 hits with 59 K's, 23 walks and 4 homers in 60.1 innings. He ranks among the NL leaders in strikeouts (59), ERA (2.69) and opponent’s batting average against (.190). In his last start he allowed three runs on three hits with 6 K's, 3 walks and two homers in 7.0 innings in a 4-3 home win over St. Louis. He is 5-1 at home this season, but only 1-2 on the road. Wells (10-9, 3.28 ERA in 2003) comes in 3-4 with a 3.86 ERA in his first nine starts this season. He has allowed 23 runs on 52 hits with 49 K's, 25 walks and six homers 51.1 innings. In his last start, he pitched well enough to get a win, but took a no-decision in a 2-1 setback to Milwaukee. In that game he allowed one run on four hits with 8 K's, 2 walks and one homer in 7.0 innings. In his last two starts, Wells has struck out 13 and allowed just two earned runs in 12.0 innings. He is 3-0 with a 1.91 ERA in nine career starts against the Cubs.
