FREE Service Selection For Thursday, May 27, 2004

Minnesota Timberwolves at Los Angeles Lakers 9:00 PM ET

    Minnesota +7.5 (2 Units)

The Lakers enjoyed a huge advantage at the free throw line and we see that evening out tonight. There was a 43-14 discrepancy in free-throw attempts the Lakers enjoyed, including only four attempts by Kevin Garnett. "Just because Kevin's 7-1 and he faces up, that doesn't mean that Karl Malone's allowed to have two hands on him," Saunders said. "From that standpoint, that's extremely disappointing. We didn't get to the line, and they did." Don’t expect Minnesota to follow their same philosophy in Game 4 that they did in Game 3. They decided to let Shaquille O’Neal win or lose the game from the foul line by constantly doing the hack job on him. The Wolves' four centers committed 16 fouls. That won’t happen again. "Fouling Shaq slowed the game down," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "It kept them in a half-court situation. It gave us a lot of rest, so we were able to keep Shaq in throughout the second half.” You can't let O'Neal walk through a game. That's what the Wolves did in Game 1, and that's what they did again Tuesday night. That's why they trail Los Angeles 2-1 in this series. Wally Szczerbiak found his shooting touch after an inconsistent postseason. He averaged 7.3 points against the Kings and was not a factor in Game 1 against the Lakers, but he burst free with 16 points and seven assists in 39 minutes in Game 2. In Game 3, he tallied 21 points, including 14 in the third quarter. In Game 3, the Los Angeles Lakers had promised to play from start to finish with unbridled energy. They didn't. They were lucky enough to win this game thanks to a bad performance by Minnesota. And of course the free throws. The Timberwolves can get home court back with a win tonight and expect to see a much more focused and team oriented effort on Thursday. Sam Cassell's ailing back improved enough for him to play 26 minutes and score 18 points. He sat out the 4th quarter with the exception of a minute but he looks to play on Thursday.
