Plus the somewhat upstart San Diego Padres who are fighting for the top of their division. Adam Eaton will start for the Padres, who at the time of this writing are 19-14 overall, and 11-6 at home. Eaton is a young 26 year old who San Diego has determined is good enough to pay about two million dollars per year. Adam has a history of starting slowly and gaining momentum as the game develops. He seems to hold back some extra for the big situations. Eaton has a fastball clocked in the mid 90’s, plus a curve he throws anywhere from 68-78 miles per hour. He has mixed in a solid change-up and just an ok slider. He runs into trouble when he tries to nibble and get too fine with location. In 42 innings pitched, he has walked six and struck-out five while holding opponents to a .296 BA and a has a WHIP of 1.28. Chicago has been everyone’s favorite since the addition of Greg Maddux to an already strong staff of starting pitchers. No one knew that Mark Prior would encounter his injury, but look what Matt Clement has done in his absence. Today’s starter Sergio Mitre is 1-2 with an ERA of 6.01.
