When Tim Hudson is on the mound, a win is usually in order for the A’s. Oakland is 6-1 the last 7 starts by Hudson including a perfect 4-0 record this season. Don’t think the Yankees will be an intimidation factor as Hudson has one of the best success rates against New York even if his record doesn’t show it. The A’s are 6-1 in Hudson’s last 7 starts against New York with the only loss being a 2-1 decision back in 2002. Hudson and the bullpen have allowed 2 runs or less in 6 of those 7 starts. The Yankees continue to slump as they are coming off a sweep to the hand of the Red Sox. The offense continued to struggle, managing just 15 hits in the three-game set. The Yankees' batting average is now an AL-low .217, as several players are mired in slumps. Derek Jeter is hitless in his last 25 at-bats, while Bernie Williams has one hit in his last 17 at-bats. Mike Mussina will look to get back on track but he has been completely out of character and a turnaround in just one game isn’t likely. New York is 1-3 in his 4 starts this season and they are 2-8 in his last 10 dating back to last season. Against Oakland, the Yankees are 2-5 in games Mussina starts. The offense has scored only 19 runs in those games, scoring 2 runs or less 5 times. This season, Mussina is carrying a 6.67 ERA while Hudson is 3 times as less at 2.15. The A’s are hitting .258 against righties while New York is hitting only .215 including a dismal .176 at Yankee Stadium. The A's have held a slight edge over New York in regular-season meetings over the last three years, winning 16 of the 27 games. New York went 3-6 against Oakland last season.
