We’re back with another Free Pick for Friday off yesterday’s easy winner with Toronto. Tonight the White Sox meet the Devil Rays in what should be an outright slugfest as neither starting pitcher has had much success recently.
Dan Wright, starting for the Sox has won only 1 game since 2002 and always puts a lot of men on base. He walked 46 batters last year in only 86 innings and the league batted an incredible .277 against him. His first start this season lasted only 4 innings allowing 4 runs, 4 hits and 4 walks.
For Tampa Bay Paul Abbott will take the mound tonight, and unfortunately for the Rays, he has not fared much better in recent years winning only 2 games in his last 14 starts over parts of the last three seasons. Similar to Wright, Abbott is susceptible to walking batters and puts plenty of runners on the bases. However, Wright is (2-1) against Tampa lifetime, holding them to only a .203 average with a respectable 3.44 ERA.
Chicago’s bats are hot right now and the team is averaging over 6.5 runs per game – having three regulars batting over .350. They are coming off a 3-game sweep of Kansas City where they scored 28 runs and even averaged over 5 runs per game against the Yankees last week. On the other hand, Tampa Bay is averaging 4.8 runs per game, but this number is inflated because they have only scored more than 4 runs in a game twice this season.
As neither of tonight’s pitchers will dominate, look for the runs to pile up. (The total in this game is 10.5 just to give you an idea). Go with the White Sox on Friday night and expect their offense to continue to tear through Abbott and the Devil Rays.
