Rutgers Scarlet Knights vs Iowa St. Cyclones 7:00 pm EST

Rutgers and Iowa St. are averaging 143 ppg this season on offense but that number drops significantly when they take to the road. Combined they are putting up just 129.5 ppg away from home. This will be the first non-home NIT game for Rutgers, who averaged 136.7 ppg in their 3 NIT home games. The Cyclones averaged 151 ppg in their 2 NIT home games but scored only 121 points in their game with Florida St., their lone road NIT contest. Iowa St. is averaging 128.0 ppg total in their last 3 road games while the Scarlet Knights are putting up 128.3 ppg total in their last 3 on the road. Rutgers and Iowa State are similar teams. “We play three guards and they play three guards," Rutgers coach Gary Waters said. "They have two guys inside with good size and we have two guys inside with good size. We have to take care of the transition game and their zone." What he means is slowing down the game and the Cyclones who will want to push the ball. Perimeter defense was a problem for Iowa State during the regular season, but not lately. The Cyclones put the clamps on Florida State during a 62-59 triumph last Tuesday. The Seminoles made just 24% of their three-pointers (8 of 34). A rabid defense against the Golden Eagles in their last game was the difference for Iowa St. to earn a trip here. The Cyclones held Marquette to 39.3% shooting and allowed few open looks from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles came in leading Conference USA in 3-point shooting but shot 4 of 14 in the first half and made 9 of 27 for the game. The Cyclone defensive effort has picked up dramatically in recent games, holding its three NIT opponents (Georgia, Florida State, Marquette) to 38.9% shooting (72-185 FG). Iowa St. has allowed only six teams (Colorado, Oklahoma State, Kansas State, Colorado, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State) to shoot 50% or above from the field this season. Defensively, Rutgers has been high atop the Big East in three-point field goal pct. defense and blocked shots all season. RU is eighth in the nation in blocked shots thanks in large part to senior forward Herve Lamizana, who is tied for 14th in the nation in blocks.
