NCAAB - Xavier Musketeers (+7.5) over Duke Blue Devils
The Musketeers move into the Elite Eight for the first time in their history after beating Atlanta 79-71 on Friday night. Senior guard Romain Sato was the star for Xavier with 27 points. They are on fire and have now won nine straight games and 16 of their last 17 dating back to January 31st. They have also dominated against the books over that span, going 16-1 against the spread. Their success can be largely attributed to the senior trio of Lionel Chalmers, Sato, and Anthony Myles who have combined to average 50.7 points and 20 rebounds in seven postseason matchups, all the while shooting 53.2 percent from the field.
The Musketeers have had success against AP Top 10 teams this season, going 3-1 in 4 games. They defeated No. 1 Saint Joseph's by 20 points on March 11, beat No. 10 Cincinnati 71-69 on February 3, and beat No. 8 Mississippi State 89-74 on March 21st. The only loss came at the hands of Saint Joseph's (then a 6th seed) on January 17th.
The Blue Devils may be their toughest challenge yet. They average 80 points per game and their defense only allows 64.6 ppg. Mike Krzyzewski's squad has some fierce offensive weapons in guards Daniel Ewing and J.J. Redick(16.0 ppg) along with Chris Duhon who not only scores a lot but has 299 career steals which ranks fourth all-time in the ACC.
However, we believe Xavier is up to the challenge once again and they have the ability to keep this game fairly close. Sato is one of the best rebounders in school history. The 6-5 guard's 7.9 rebounds per game is fourth in the Atlantic 10 conference. A member of Dick Vitale's "All-Velcro" Team which is made up of top-ranked defensive players, Sato can control the game at both ends of the floor. Look for a big game from him and for the Musketeers to make this one interesting against the tough 1 seed.
