No. 4 Wake Forest Demon Deacons vs No. 1 St. Joseph's Hawks 9:57 pm EST
St. Joseph’s –2.5 (2 Units)
This is a dream matchup for Hawks coach Phil Martelli. He is going against the Deacons and at the same time, Wake Forest alumnus Billy Packer. Not a lot can be read into how important this game is because of that, but it should give St. Joe’s just a little extra which could be the difference between a win/loss and cover/non cover. Wake Forest has definitely earned a trip to the Sweet Sixteen but they could be playing the worst of all of the remaining teams in the field. They finished with three straight up losses to end their conference season and their two tournament wins by a combined five-point margin of victory over a 13- and a 12-seed isn’t very impressive either. A permissive defense could be the Deacons' undoing in the Sweet Sixteen. Yes, the ACC is home to some of the most potent offenses in the nation, but Wake allowed 80 points per game this year. They have allowed at least 80 points in 8 of their last 10 games with opponents scoring 76 and 78 points in the other 2 contests. St. Joe's is the most accurate shooting team left in the Tournament. The Hawks have perhaps the nation's top backcourt. Senior Jameer Nelson is a savvy senior who does whatever his team needs - scoring, passing or rebounding. Delonte West and Pat Carroll are the second and third scoring options. Despite a lack of size up front, Saint Joseph's is a good defensive team, particularly when defending the perimeter. The matchup between Jameer Nelson and Chris Paul should be outstanding. However, because of the lack of defense on the side of the Deacons, St. Joe’s has the edge here as they have some options in guarding Paul. Tyrone Barley is a premier on-the-ball defender. Nelson will be intent on trying to establish his superiority over Paul. If Martelli wants to go with height against Paul, the 6-4 Delonte West and 6-5 Chet Stachitas are at his disposal. But Barley will be his man. Game after game, when an opposing player starts going off on a scoring binge, Martelli pulls Barley off the bench with the simple instruction: "Stop him." It's no coincidence that after Barley went into Saturday's win over Texas Tech, Tech's Andre Emmitt had one basket the final 14 minutes of the first half. St. Joe’s played the game against Texas Tech rather tight but now that it’s over they should be much more loose for this one. "There was an internal pressure I felt," Martelli conceded. "I think, if we hadn't made it to the Sweet 16, it would have been 'You failed. You're not that good.' So, yes, I felt a sense of relief when the game ended.” Guard play and defense are two of the most important factors in tournament games and St. Joe’s has the edge at both.
