NBA - Portland Trail Blazers (+8) over Indiana Pacers

The Trail Blazers head into Indiana on Wednesday night coming off a dramatic 100-99 victory Tuesday in Milwaukee in which Damon Stoudamire hit a shot with 6/10ths of a second on the clock to give Portland the win. Wednesday's game is the final stop on their 3-game road trip where they are attempting to go 3-0.

Portland has had success beating the books, going 11-4 against the spread in their last 15 matchups. They have averaged 88 points per game this season on the road. However, Indiana only betters that number by 2 points at home. This is a key stat to look at in this game with the spread being as high as it is. Both teams have a solid defensive core and this game should remain a lot closer than the 8 points dictates.

Look for Zach Randolph to get a good share of boards for the Trail Blazers and for them to stay in this one. The line is too big here.

We like the road dog. Take Portland getting the points.

NBA - Golden State Warriors (+4) over Houston Rockets

The Warriors look to make it three in a row Friday night when they welcome Yao Ming and the rest of the Houston Rockets to The Arena in Oakland. So far on this homestand they have defeated San Antonio by 17 and Orlando by 25. Two big reasons for the recent surge have been the offense of Jason Richardson (18.7 points per game) and the strong defense of rookie Mickael Pietrus, who held league-leading scorer Tracy McGrady to 18 points on 5-of-14 from the field Wednesday night.

Golden State puts up big points at home, averaging 97 ppg this season. Their defense is also pretty tough on their home court, allowing 92 ppg. Houston boasts a very strong defense but the other side of the court is where they struggle when away from home, averaging a measly 87 ppg on the road. Their most recent loss was to Phoenix in a game in which the Rockets were 10.5 point favorites. They wound up losing by 2 points, 99-97. They have struggled against the spread since the All-Star break, going 5-9 ATS in those games.

We like the home dog in this contest. Take Golden State getting the points.

        SATURDAY'S FREE HOOPS PLAY

        3/20/04 - 10:05 PM EST
NBA - Portland Trail Blazers (-12.5) over Orlando Magic

The .500 Blazers host the lowly 19-51 Orlando Magic on Saturday night. Portland's 4-game winning streak was snapped Wednesday with an 81-70 defeat at the hands of the Indiana Pacers, while the Magic were crushed by Golden State by a score of 110-85.

Portland is a team on the rise since losing the troubled Rasheed Wallace and acquiring Darius Miles, Shareef Abdur-Rahim, and Theo Ratliff. Damon Stoudamire is re-energized and Portland, in the midst of what was once considered a lost season, is just 1.5 games out of a playoff spot in the West.

Look for Portland to carry their recent momentum into this matchup against what has turned into a one-dimensional Orlando team. In a sense, it's T-Mac and not much else on the floor for the Magic. Expect a blowout in this game.

We like the home favorite here. Take Portland laying the points.

          SUNDAY'S FREE TOURNAMENT PLAY

          3/21/04 - 2:15 PM EST
NCAAB - Boston College Eagles (+6) over Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

Led by 6-7 forward Craig Smith, No. 6 Boston College takes on Georgia Tech Sunday afternoon. The Eagles moved on to the second round after defeating eleventh-seed Utah on Friday night by a score of 58-51. Smith had 19 points and eight rebounds in the victory. The Yellow Jackets moved into the second round by just barely holding off Northern Iowa 65-60. Tech were 13 point favorites in a game where they found themselves scrambling after Northern Iowa put on a dazzling 27-9 run which spanned halftime.

With a 23-9 overall record during the regular season, the Eagles entered the tournament winning 10 of their last 12 games. Their defense has been their key all season, allowing a meager 63.8 points per game. They limited their opponents to less than 60 points in 10 games. In those 10 games, BC was undefeated. They also forced 14 turnovers per game and racked up an average of 7 steals.

Make no mistake, the Yellow Jackets put up points, averaging 77.6 ppg during the season. However, look for that number to be held in check in this matchup when they go up against BC's solid D. If the Eagles can stifle Australian Junior center Luke Schenscher as well as B.J. Elder they may find themselves victorious in this matchup.

Even if BC cannot pull off a win outright, they should be successful against the books. This matchup will remain close down to the final buzzer and we like the Eagles getting the points. Georgia Tech, 6-10 against the spread in their last 16 games, are laying too much here.

Take Boston College getting the points in this second round contest.

WEDNESDAY'S NBA PLAY OF THE DAY!!

            3/24/04 - 9:05 PM EST
NBA - Denver Nuggets (+2) over Minnesota Timberwolves

The Nuggets snapped a three game skid in fine fashion on Monday with a 102-80 thrashing of the Clippers at Pepsi Center. Denver had six players in double figures, led by rookie Carmelo Anthony's 22 points. Anthony struggled on the recent road trip, but looked very sharp against LA. They host Minnesota on Wednesday night. One of the losses on the road trip was to the Timberwolves in Minnesota on Sunday. However, Denver is a much more powerful team at home, averaging 99.4 points per game on the offensive end while limiting opponents to 92 ppg.

Denver, 24-12 at home this season, have surprised the league all season with their play and look to be on the rebound after a recent slide. This matchup should remain close throughout, and if Marcus Camby can get a good share of the boards, the Nuggets should find themselves victorious.

We like the home dog. Take Denver getting the points.
