Illinois St. has now lost 10 of their last 12 games and to make matters worse, they head to Springfield to face one of the two teams that they have beaten since December 20th. SW Missouri St. is well aware of this and wants nothing more than to avenge that loss, which snapped a 4-game win streak and was their only loss in a 7-game span. The Bears are 8-3 at home, winning 5 of their last 6 while the Redbirds are 1-8 on the road. They are still in the hunt for 2nd place in the MVC and with games against the top 5 teams remaining, wins like this are a must. Illinois St. is tied with Evansville for a share of the basement at 2-9. Southwest Missouri St. has allowed 54.7 ppg over last eight games. The reason for the strong play on defense is due to a lot of fresh legs because of superior depth. The Bears have 11 players averaging 12 or more minutes per game. Rebounding also plays a big part in the Bears success, as Southwest Missouri St. is 16th in NCAA team rebound margin (+6.8). They have outrebounded 18 of 22 foes this season, seven by 10 or more boards, and has beaten four teams by 15 or more boards. The Bears rank second in the conference with 12.41 offensive rebounds per game. Coming off a 7-point loss at Southern Illinois on Tuesday only makes the Bears that much more hungry. They fought back from a 17-point deficit to cut the lead to one point late in the game but the Salukis eventually pulled away. "It's not good enough," SMS guard Merrill Andrews said. “You play to win. We shouldn't be satisfied with our comeback because we shouldn't have to come from so far back." That type of mentality is what could turn this game into a blowout early.
