West Virginia Mountaineers vs. Marshall Thundering Herd 8:00 pm EST

    Marshall +1.5 (2 Units)

West Virginia looks to be in rebuilding mode once again as they try to get some experience for their very young team. With the dismissal of Drew Schifino, not only did the Mountaineers lose their top scorer, they lost a lot of valuable experience and leadership. In their last game against Providence, they went 9 deep but 3 of those were freshmen and 4 were sophomores. Marshall won its last game at home against Buffalo after dropping three straight to Kent State, Western Michigan and Toledo, three of the best teams in the MAC. Against Buffalo, Marshall went with a starting lineup featuring 6-foot-8 junior Eric Smith and 6-foot-9 sophomore Mark Patton at forwards, 6-foot-10 senior Ardo Armpalu at center. That lineup will cause problems for West Virginia. The Mountaineers are dead last in the Big East in rebounding, averaging a mere 32.5 rpg. They are getting outrebounded by nearly 7 per game and Marshall is one of the best, averaging 40.3 rpg, which leads the MAC. Now coming off the bench after starting 10 games is 6-foot-7 senior forward Marvin Black, who leads Marshall in scoring with an average of 13.5 points per game. Black is shooting 55.8 percent from the floor and is averaging a team-best 7.5 rebounds per game. West Virginia coach John Beilein wants to win against Marshall, but at the same time he’s more concerned about seeing his young team make improvement. “I want to try everything right now,” said Beilein. “We’re going to have games like this when we’re going to get down early and we’ve got to try things. We committed ourselves to the future and we know this is going to happen again. Hopefully we’ll get better and we’ll see less and less of this.” This game will be played on a neutral floor in Charleston as it is every year and this is a big rivalry for both schools. It’s usually a close one and we give the edge to the Herd, as they are the more experiences group heading in and should take control of this game by the second half.
