  • NCAAF Picks: West Virginia vs. Oklahoma State

This matchup features a battle between two Big 12 teams that are known for their high-powered offenses. This is always an entertaining matchup since West Virginia head coach Dana Holgersen was an offensive coordinator for Oklahoma State a few years ago. It usually turns into an offensive chess match with both teams exchanging scores frequently throughout the game. Even though West Virginia is coming off of their biggest win since they've been in the Big 12, NCAAF expert picks still have Oklahoma State favored in the game. All signs are pointing this to being another high-scoring affair so it should be another entertaining matchup.

A stout TCU defense shut down Oklahoma State’s offense last weekend. Daxx Garman will have an easier time this week playing at home against a weaker defense. Although the Mountaineers defense held Baylor to only 27 points, the Bears don't play well on the road so it's difficult to tell how legitimate they are based on one performance. It's likely that the Cowboys will be able to move the ball consistently and put up some big offensive numbers. Their defense has been good at times and shaky other times. West Virginia has a good offense, but can be stopped. If coach Mike Gundy and his defensive staff come up with a good gameplan, then they will have a good shot at winning the game.

It will be interesting to see how the Mountaineers respond to their huge win over fourth-ranked Baylor. It seemed like West Virginia was poised to win a big game or two this season after playing Alabama and Oklahoma tough earlier in the year. They were able to do just that against Baylor and now will have to prove that it's not a one-hit wonder. Quarterback Clint Trickett needs to follow-up his performance with another big one to take down Oklahoma State on the road. The Mountaineers may be a little underrated due to the level of competition they have played so far. Now that the schedule lightens up a bit, there's a good chance that the Mountaineers could make some moves up the rankings.

Defense should be at a premium in this matchup so it could come down to who has the ball last. Winning the turnover battle is going to be key as well, since you can't afford to give either team extra possessions. With Trickett having more big game experience than Garman, you would have to give a slight edge to West Virginia in this one. Playing at home will help the Cowboys, as well as being very familiar with Holgersen's schemes. Lead changes and momentum swings will likely be the storyline of this game. The team that is able to hold on to the ball and capitalize on mistakes will likely be the team that comes out on top of this one. Oklahoma State will be looking to prove themselves after last week's poor performance and West Virginia will suffer a letdown after their big win a week ago.
