This SEC matchup involves two teams that have been going in separate directions this season. South Carolina began the season ranked in the top-10 in the AP poll. They have proved to be one of the most over ranked teams to begin the season. Some NCAAF predictions experts thought that these two teams could win their respective divisions and square off again in the SEC Championship game. With the Gamecocks already having three losses and looking at Auburn's difficult schedule ahead, it's very likely that neither team will represent its division in the title game. Auburn as more than two touchdown favorites at home in this contest. The way things have been going for both teams, it's very possible that that could happen.
Auburn is coming off of a much-needed bye week after playing a pretty difficult first half of their schedule. Now the schedule gets even more difficult, starting this weekend against South Carolina. The Tigers are putting together another solid season behind quarterback Nick Marshall. The Gamecocks defense has been vulnerable for most of the season so Marshall should be able to expose those weaknesses throughout the game. Their defense has been lights out at times as well, shutting down teams like LSU and Kansas State earlier in the season. Having an extra week to prepare for this game looks like it could be a mismatch on both sides of the ball in Auburn's favor.
Although South Carolina didn't have a bye week last week, it was technically a break in their schedule when they played Furman. Playing a team like Furman at this point in the season could be beneficial to the Gamecocks for a couple of reasons. The game was nothing more than a glorified scrimmage and it also should get their confidence up after putting up some big offensive numbers and playing solid defense. Quarterback Dylan Thompson will have to have a big game for South Carolina to have a shot in this one. Steve Spurrier has been searching for answers as to why his team has been so inconsistent. They have a quality win over Georgia, but also have some head-scratching losses to go with it. They will need their best performance of the season to take down Auburn on the road.
