Boise State-Mississippi OVER 53
Both teams use a 4-2-5 base defense. This look often confounds teams, but each offense has faced it in practice, so that is not an issue. Third in the SEC in passing yardage in 2013, the Rebels return the conference’s most veteran quarterback in senior Bo Wallace. He has improved each year.
They return two RBs who each has 500 yards plus on the ground last year I’Tavius Mathers and Jaylen Walton. Bryan Harsin, who left Arkansas State takes over at Boise. Remember our Golden Rule: handicapping totals is much more about pace than offensive or defensive competence.
Arkansas State’s spread offense averaged 29.2 points in Harsin’s only season as head mentor. He also was the playcaller at Texas and Boise State. His history suggests he will open things up. Boise has two starting CBs who stand just 5-foot-9 in Donte Deayon and Cleshawn Page. The Rebels averaged 78.3 plays per game with a fast-paced attack.
They go against wide receiver Laquon Treadwell, 6-2, 224 lbs. Treadwell caught 72 passes last season and is joined by tight end Evan Engram a 6-3, 214 pounder. This is big mismatch territory.
Ole Miss also starts a pair of 5-9 cornerbacks as well. Boise has receiver Matt Miller, 6-3, 220 lbs. Last season, the Broncos’ scoring offense ranked second in the Mountain West and 19th nationally, averaging 37.5 points per game. Exploiting a height advantage, we look for each offense to have success.
Boise has some studs on offense. RB Jay Ajayi, rushed for 1,425 yards and 18 touchdowns last campaign. WR Matt Miller caught a school-record 88 passes for 1,140 yards and 12 touchdowns as a junior. QB Grant Hedrick made seven starts last season. Our true line (previously known as outlaw line) is 56 and our metrics say it would easily exceed that. The true line is what the line would be without public perception or bad line moves.
