Gator Bowl – West Virginia Mountaineers vs. Maryland Terrapins 12:30 pm EST

    Maryland –3.5 (2 Units)

Maryland finished the season strong winning 9 of their last 10 games with their only loss being a 7-3 setback to Georgia Tech after QB Scott McBrien was knocked out of the game. West Virginia finished even stronger as they won their last 7 games. They lost only 1 game by more than a touchdown and that was to these Terrapins 34-7 back on September 20th. It’s difficult to beat a team twice in the same season but Maryland matches up very well with the Mountaineers and a repeat of the first meeting isn’t out of the question. The Mountaineers are 14th in the nation on the ground due to the great play of RB Quincy Wilson. West Virginia is 1-4 when Wilson has played and rushed for less than 100 yards and 6-0 when he rushes for over 100. Maryland allowed a 100-yard rushed only twice this season and they came away with wins in both of those games. They held Wilson to 71 yards on 20 carries (3.6 ypc) in the first meeting. The Terps are 29th in the country against the run, allowing 127.3 ypg and 3.4 ypc. Wilson and the rest of the Mountaineers are going to have a tough time again in the middle against a tough Terps front seven led by tackle Randy Starks and LB D'Qwell Jackson. Jackson is more of a strong safety than a linebacker, but he has the speed to stay with any of the Mountaineer backs. Starks will be a first-day NFL draft pick for his quickness at disrupting things in the backfield. Maryland has the second best secondary Rasheed Marshall has faced all year (Miami's is better) and will make the West Virginia passing attack all but non-existent. Maryland is 17th against the pass and 19th in passing efficiency. The Mountaineers are 104th in passing offense. To date, McBrien is 2-0 against his former team and will look for his third win in a row over the Mountaineers in what would be his second-consecutive New Year's Day Bowl victory after he led the Terps to a win over Tennessee in last year's Peach Bowl. The Mountaineers struggle to defend the pass and lack the offensive firepower to play from behind if McBrien gets on a roll. West Virginia is 93rd in the nation, allowing 249.8 ypg through the air. However, the strength of the Maryland offense is their ground game. Over the last four games, the Terps have run the ball more effectively than at any other point in the season. Over that stretch, Maryland has averaged 264.8 rushing yards per game. They will need that type of production in order to control the time of possession and keep Wilson off the field as much as possible in this game. The Terps dominated the first matchup between these two teams and with their offensive balance the much better of the two, they sweep the season series without much problem.
