  • Week four recap

We now enter the main part of the college football season as conference play begins in full force for most teams. We can now evaluate teams on what they have done this year instead of what we projected them to do based on last year's returning talent, since most have played four games. What we know so far is that at least one, most likely both, of the teams to be in the BCS Championship game will come from the SEC, Pac 12, or Big 12. The only other possibility would be Florida St or Notre Dame. The Big 10 is arguably having its worst year in recent memory. They may want to cancel the Rose Bowl right now. It would be fitting if the only two decent teams were Ohio St and Penn St, both of whom are inelligible to win the Big 10 this year. Picking up the rear are the ACC and Big East, as usual. Don't sleep on the Sun Belt conference. I'm guessing that the big boys will be a bit more selective in future years about which of these teams they want to schedule. This is also the final year for the WAC, after 50 some odd years, the first casualty of conference reallignment.

It is still to early to evaluate the NFL. The Falcons and Texans appear to be pretty good, while it may be panic time for the Saints. One of the main stories in the early go is the replacement referrees. I personally am tired of all the whining from coaches, players, and commentators. Actually, all of this is giving more power to the referrees since they now have a bargaining chip, even though the quality of officiating has certainly hurt the product the NFL has put on the field and appears to have cost one team a game (Green Bay). The Jets took a big Blow as Derell Revis appears to be done for the season.
