Wisconsin Badgers at Maryland Terrapins 9:30 pm EST

    Wisconsin +4 (2 units)

The Badgers are doing it with defense again as they have held their 3 opponents to 47.7 ppg and winning by an average of 19 ppg. But the Badgers understand there is much room for improvement. In their last game against Rutgers, they forced Rutgers into 23 turnovers and limited the Scarlet Knights to 39.1 percent shooting from the field. However, the Badgers shot only 37.8 percent from the floor, were outrebounded 35-28 and committed a season-high 12 turnovers after totaling only 13 in the first two games. They must do a better job of holding onto the ball as well as hit the glass against the Terps. But Maryland seems to be going through a lot of growing pains with their young team even though they are 3-0. In their last game against Hofstra, they were very average. Maryland shot poorly, both from the field and especially the free-throw line, where it was 31-55. That basically negated a night in which its defense forced 25 turnovers and notched 14 steals. Otherwise, the Terps played defense with detachment. They were outworked on the boards. They failed to capitalize on foul trouble that hampered the Pride all night, eventually claiming four Hofstra starters and six players overall. Sure, the Badgers are struggling to shoot the ball, just 17.6% from three-point range. But they don't need to score big to win. Their system is based on milking the clock, on making disciplined cuts and wearing teams down with half-court, man-to-man defense. "We haven't done anything different," head coach Bo Ryan said. "Our shooting percentage is down some, but I think part of the reason is we're making such an effort on the defensive end, and on the offensive end in making our cuts. The guys just need to feel more comfortable in their roles and with their shots. It'll come. The effort's there." The difference could come at the free throw line. Wisconsin is shooting 75.8% from the charity stripe compared to 56% for the Terps.
