Denver Pioneers at Eastern Washington Eagles 10:30 pm EST

    Eastern Washington –7.5 (3 Units)

The Eagles return to Cheney to play their home opener after taking part in the Sooner Invitational. They dropped the opener 69-59 to the Sooners in a game in which they almost pulled off the huge upset. With the Eagles ahead 58-51 with about seven minutes remaining, Oklahoma took advantage of several Eastern turnovers to go on an 8-0 run at take its first lead of the night at 59-58. Eastern Washington went the final six minutes without a field goal. Because of the devastating loss, they came out very flat the next night and fell to South Carolina St. by 20 points. This is a very talented team as Eastern returns three starters from last year, including first team All-Big Sky Conference selections Alvin Snow and Marc Axton. Honorable mention All-Big Sky selection Brendon Merritt returns, and the Eagles will have the services of University of Washington transfer Josh Barnard. With the exception of Merritt, the other three are averaging double-digits after the 2 games. Denver could be in for a long season but they do boast good experience and depth on their roster. They are coming off a 90-58 loss to Gonzaga on Monday. Gonzaga pulled down 18 offensive rebounds in the game and forced Denver into 19 turnovers. Denver also shot a paltry 39.1% (9-23) from the free throw line, which is a big factor especially when playing on the road. Last year, the Pioneers handed the Eagles a 69-48 thumping in Denver, which was Eastern Washington’s only loss during an eight-game stretch from Nov. 16 to Dec. 18. That alone will have them amped up for this rematch. Reese Court is always a tough place for visitors as the Eagles have posted a 35-11 record there over the past 4 seasons.
