New England Patriots at Houston Texans 1:00 pm EST

New England finds themselves in the classic sandwich game as they are coming off their Sunday night game with Dallas and they are at Indianapolis next week. Texans quarterback David Carr will miss at least one game and perhaps more with a sprained right shoulder. Veteran Tony Banks will get his second start of the season Sunday. The last time Carr missed his start, Banks led Houston to a win over Carolina.
There is common ground among Houston's victories over the Dolphins, Jaguars, Panthers and Bills. All four teams are defensive-minded partially by necessity, because their offenses aren't exactly juggernauts. Miami and Buffalo rank among the league's top 11 defenses in yardage and scoring. Carolina has one of the better scoring defenses but gives up lots of yards. Jacksonville has one of the best statistical defenses, except they give up too many points. The Texans have shown they can handle such defenses. What hurts them are talented offenses that have used myriad weapons to feast on the Texans' depleted defense. Andre Johnson and Domanick Davis helped breathe life into the Houston offense. They are on pace to become the first rookie teammates to have a 1,000-yard receiving year and a 1,000-yard rushing year. And, they've become legitimate threats that shape defensive game plans. Davis rushed for only 68 yards last week, but the Texans gave him 26 carries and will need to take the same approach this week.
Injuries have caused the Patriots to reshuffle their offensive line, as Damien Woody was moved to guard and rookie Dan Koppen has replaced him at center. Raw right tackle Tom Ashworth also has been pushed into the starting lineup. The Patriots have been winning lately but they have played ugly on the road recently. They have lost by three at Washington, won at Miami in OT, and won in the last seconds at Denver who were without their starting quarterback. Conversely, the Texas have been solid at home recently, winning games against Jacksonville and Carolina while losing to the Jets by only 4 points.
