    (135) Northwestern Wildcats at (136) Illinois Illini 10:00 pm EST

    Northwestern –3.5 (3 Units)

If the Wildcats win, they'll probably be in the Motor City Bowl completing an improbable year. Illinois has been an utter disaster still looking for its first win over a D-I team this year. The Wildcats run extremely well on average teams, and Illinois would certainly qualify with a run defense giving up 204 yards per game. The Wildcats are playing with supreme confidence even after getting blasted by Michigan.

Illinois is 93rd in total offense and 93rd in total defense. The Illini season started badly at 1-3 but they lost their 3 games by only a combined 17 points. Since then, it has been a different story as they have allowed at least 36 ppg in 6 of their last 7 games (43.8 allowed in those games). Their only close game came two weeks ago at Indiana, losing by 3 points. That certainly deflated them. Illinois’ rushing and receiving leaders, E.B. Halsey and Kelvin Hayden, will return from injuries to play this week. It’s saying much for their running game however as Halsey is averaging a mere 59.3 ypg.

The Wildcats lost only two fumbles in their first eight games, but then quarterback Brett Basanez fumbled it away three times and running back Jason Wright did it once against Purdue. Wright and running back Noah Herron each lost a fumble against Penn State, as did Basanez and kickoff returner Derell Jenkins against Michigan. "It has become a major problem," Wright said. "Our inability to hang on to the ball has kept people in the game who we should have beat handily and cost us games against talented teams." The good news is that Illinois is dead last in the country in takeaways. They have only 6, which is 4 less than North Carolina and Central Florida.

Coach Randy Walker said there's a chance wide receivers Roger Jordan and Mark Philmore will be well enough to play Saturday. Jordan has missed two games with a bruised sternum and Philmore has missed three with knee injuries. Plenty of tickets remain as a crowd of around 40,000 is expected. Permanent seating capacity of Memorial Stadium is 70,904.
