PORTLAND+2’ Boise
Boise senior Bryan Defares, the team´s second-leading scorer last year, will serve a one-game suspension imposed by the NCAA after the guard participated in a non-sanctioned summer league basketball game.
That hurts because the Broncos are also lean on post players, especially after two (Larry Davidson and Mattias Johansson) left the program Wednesday. Guard Darius Harper and post players Larry Davidson and Mattias Johansson no longer are part of the team, leaving the Broncos with 10 scholarship players.
Conversely the Pilots have a lot of depth. They will wear down Boise inside led by 6-foot-8 returnees Andreas Gahlmann and Patrick Galos, 6-9 freshman Christopher Jackson from Australia and 6-8 freshman Dreshawn Vance from Walnut, Calif.
But the backcourt is their strength, which means Holton could go for stretches with a small lineup of 6-4 Wilson, 6-3 Frandsen, 6-2 Quick and 5-10 Jeter on the court at the same time.
Teams that play internationally can get an early start on the season and that is the case for the Portlanders. The Pilots got a jump on the season with a recent trip to the Bahamas, where they went 5-0 against local club teams.
“It went extremely well,” Holton said. “We got accomplished what we needed to accomplish.
“But we got to practice 10 days before we left, which was the biggest thing.”
Holton started a different lineup each game, so he saw a lot of combinations and learned about his personnel—including five freshmen and one transfer on a roster of 16.
“I thought that was a huge, huge lift for our program,” Holton said.
The top seven players return from last season’s team, which was 11-17, 4-10 in the West Coast Conference.
