East Carolina has won three straight against Memphis by an average of 17 points per game and is 7-0 ATS in the series the last seven years. Memphis lost starting QB Tyler Bass following the week #5 loss to Central Florida. Senior QB Will Hudgens is back yet again for the Tigers at QB. What does it tell you about his effectiveness given the fact he's a 6th-year senior that lost his starting job? East Carolina stepped up their schedule this year playing West Virginia and North Carolina on the road in September after they beat Appalachian State at home. The Pirates are a very impressive 8-3 straight-up in conference USA road games the past three years. That includes a win at Marshall this year and handing Tulsa their only loss in a dozen home games before Boise State beat the Golden Hurricane last week. That was also Tulsa's only conference home loss in a 10-game span. ECU is 3-1 in league play and could have been perfect had they not suffered a tough 28-21 loss at SMU, the week after they upset Marshall on the road. The Pirates have yielded 14, 17, 28, and 13 points in their four CUSA games. Memphis is 3-6 lifetime on Tuesday night. ECU got their offense in high gear last time out against Rice winning 49-13 and rolling up 459 yards of offense. In their last three games East Carolina has ran for 155, 176, and 173 yards. It's kind of a running game by committee. #1 tailback Dominque Lindsawy with 431 yards on 77 carries is questionable tonight with a sprained ankle. Senior QB Patrick Pinkney has thrown for 467 yards in his last two games. But make no mistake the difference in this game should be defensively. ECU has held their last two opponents to a total of 109 rushing yards. Memphis is allowing 29.3 points per game this year and that's despite playing Middle Tennessee State and Tennessee-Martin out of conference. The Tigers are yielding 186.7 yards on the ground (#104) and 218 yards through the air (#67). In four conference games to date, the Tigers have allowed 27, 32, 20, and 36 points. Memphis is 2-5 SU this year and 17-28 the past four years. How Tommy West, in his 9th year, keeps his job is one of the real mysteries in college football. Defense hasn't been the strong suit at Memphis in years. Entering tonight they have allowed 26 or more points in 11 of their last 14 games. There is a giant disparity in coaching here as Coach Holtz is 33-25 SU in his five years with East Carolina. I suspect the Pirates are looking for payback also at the Liberty Bowl, where they blew a significant lead and lost to Kentucky 25-19 last December. One thing that does bolster Memphis on offense though is the recent return of RB Curtis Steele, who has 376 yards rushing in his last two games. Steady rain in Memphis throughout today and a 60 percent chance of it continuing tonight. This line bumped up from -4 at about 12NOON ET today. 3* ECU -5.
