    Interesting week 1 NFL information:

Betting the high's: NFL week 1 point spread and total betting
Here we'll take a look at the highest point spreads and totals on the board this weekend in the NFL. Odds-makers have a few very steep point spreads and sports books have kept these lines high. Is it wise to wager on these teams going into the first weekend of NFL point spread betting, or should these plays be over-looked and passed on with a dozen other games to wager on? Let's take a look:

Last season there were two point spreads that showed double digit dogs. Kansas City was at New England getting 16 points, while Chicago was +10 at Indy for the Sunday Night Football opener. The Chiefs covered the 16 point spread likely due to Brady's injury early on, and the Bears covered the spread and won outright. The highest total on the board was Dallas at Cleveland Over 48, which finished with a total of 38 points.

In the 2007-08 season, the biggest total on the board was the opening season game between the Saints and Colts with a projected 52.5 points. That one finished "under" as well hitting 51 total. The two biggest point spreads showed Tennessee +7.5 at Jacksonville and Chicago +7 at San Diego. The Titans covered the spread and won outright, while the Bears failed to cover their 7 point spread losing 14-3 on the road.

A look into the 2006-07 season showed 2 beefy point spreads divisional match-ups as well in the opening weekend, with Buffalo in New England getting 9.5, while San Fran were 9.5 point underdogs against the spread in Arizona. Both teams covered the meaty point spreads that weekend. Cincy and KC played to an under in their game pitted as the highest total of the week at 48.5 points. They tallied only 33 in that contest.

What we take from these past performances most recently, is that betting big favorites in the early going against the spread is not a wise decision. Considering the majority of bettors list these teams as one of their wagers for the weekend, it is a wiser decision to fade these teams against the point spread or just lay off completely. In the opening week, Detroit and New Orleans show the highest total in week 1 at 48.5 points. The Under is 3-0 over the last 3 seasons looking at the highest total for the week 1 betting odds.

As far as dogs and point spreads, in 2008 and 2006, the biggest dogs were 2-0 against the spread each year, while 2007 showed a 1-1 against the spread mark for the big dogs on the board. This year, there are 3 double digit spreads. New Orleans and Baltimore each lay 13 against the spread at home, while New England is right behind them laying 10.5 to Buffalo on Monday night. History shows that it is a smart move playing these dogs. 5-1 over the last 3 season speaks volumes, and your bankroll for this season's against the spread betting will agree!

NFL week 1 point spreads: Betting advice on low spreads and totals
Looking into recent history of point spread betting and totals wagering in the early going in the NFL season there has been some interesting numbers found. In week 1 NFL point spread betting this weekend, we see the lowest point spread showing Carolina +1 at home against the Eagles. The lowest total on the board on Sunday is 36 points between the Chiefs and Ravens. The Tennessee and Pittsburgh game came in at 35 points, the lowest of the week.

So what do we look for when betting the low point spread and low totals in the early going? We can start with research over the last 3 season in NFL week 1 betting against the line and spread. It shows that in 2008, last season, there were 4 games with a 1 point spread and 5 totals that were 37-37.5 points, all the lowest lines of the week. The home teams won 3 of the 4 games against the 1 point spread, with Baltimore getting 1 point at home resembling Carolina this year. Baltimore won that game. As for the totals, 3-2 on the under, 2-1 record with the 37 point totals to the under.

In 2007, there were two betting lines at 34-34.5, with both going under the total. As far as the low point spreads, St. Louis was -1.5 at home losing against the spread against Carolina, while Cincy covered the 2.5 point spread at home against Baltimore.

In 2006, the lowest lowest spreads showed 2 of 3 home teams covering those point spreads. Baltimore and Tampa played to an Under 33, totaling 27 points.

So in closing, history shows betting the under and the home teams with small betting lines and spreads is the wiser move recently. Two solid picks for this weekend could be said to be Carolina +1 at home against the spread and the KC/Baltimore Under. The best of luck wagering against the point spread and betting odds in week 1.
