    (145) Kansas St. Wildcats at (146) Iowa St. Cyclones 2:00 pm EST

    Kansas St. –18 (3 Units)

Iowa St. has lost their last 4 games by an average score of 43-12. Those games came against Big XII powers Oklahoma, Texas Tech, Texas and Nebraska. We can lump the Wildcats into that category as they seem to have regrouped after losing 3 straight. Those three losses were by an average of 5 points each Kansas St. controls their own destiny. If they win out, they win the North division and get a likely showdown with Oklahoma for the Big XII title.

The Wildcats came out slow last week against Baylor, taking only a 14-10 lead into halftime. "Execution is the name of the game and the bottom line was that's what it boils down to," Kansas St. coach Bill Snyder said. "We didn't get off, on either side of the ball, to a great start, and offensively we struggled." Even though they pulled away in the second half, Snyder will have his team ready from the start this week to avoid any sort of similar beginning. Between the game's first play, a 43-yard pass completion, and the Bears' final, 59-yard series against a second-string defense, Kansas St. held Baylor to 126 yards on 54 plays - an average of 2.3 yards. The defense shut out the Bears as Baylor’s only score came on a kickoff return for a touchdown. That has hampered the Wildcats all season but they now take on a Cyclones return team that is ranked 94th in kick returns and 87th in punt returns.

The Cyclones are 88th in total offense and 99th in scoring offense, averaging only 18.6 ppg. Kansas St. is 11th in total defense, including 12th against the pass and 22nd against the run. They have now gone 8 straight and 10 out of their last 11 quarters without allowing a touchdown. After allowing nearly 30 ppg during their 3 game losing streak, they have given up a total of only 36 in their 3 games since. While Iowa St, can’t muster anything on offense, the defense is allowing their share of yards. They are ranked 103rd in total defense, 99th in rushing defense, 88th in passing defense and 99th in scoring defense. The offense has put up more than 21 points in only 1 game this season while the defense had given up at least 40 points in 4 of their last 6 games.

Dan McCarney's Iowa St. team had a week off after losing its first four Big 12 games by an average of 31.5 points. It gave to the team a chance to heal some of the injuries but not all of them. McCarney has tried to remain upbeat through a rash of injuries that has contributed to 17 freshmen playing for the Cyclones. They will try out there on Saturday but the talent just isn’t there and we expect Kansas St. to come out firing on all cylinders to avoid a repeat of last week.
