Insider Edge Sports - Wednesday November 5, 2003 Report

Another day and another sweep. Congrats to the new signups who cashed easy with our top play, the Bowling Green and Miami under. If you were on the outside, this is what you missed:

    Under 62 Bowling Green/Miami (3 Units)

A showdown of the last 2 remaining undefeated MAC teams in Oxford takes place on an unusual Tuesday affair. Both teams come in with just one overall loss with both coming to Big Ten teams. The public knows all about these high-powered offenses but it’s been the defenses that have been a huge factor in their success. Miami is riding a 7-game winning streak with the average score being 45.4-18.3. If not for a 20-point 4th quarter by Cincinnati back on September 27th, the defense would be allowing just 15.4 ppg during their winning streak. Overall, the defense is ranked 28th in the country, allowing 324 ypg. They face a stiff challenge in Bowling Green who comes in raked 2nd in the nation in total offense, averaging 529.5 ypg. However, take away their 2 games against 1-AA teams and that average comes down over 40 ypg. Also, their scoring average of 36.4 ppg comes down to 27.7 ppg. Their last 4 games have come against defenses that are ranked an average of 91st in the country. This is still a very balanced attack and will be a test for Miami but the Redhawks have allowed more than 21 points only twice this season. The defense leads the MAC against the run and is second to Bowling Green in scoring and total defense. "I think, as a defense, we take pride," Miami defensive end Will Stanley said. "We knew we were ridiculed last year. Coach (Pat) Narduzzi came in and gave us an air of confidence. We're mindful of the lack of notoriety. We take pride in shutting people down." Miami has forced opponents into 116 third-down situations, 48 of which have been from 10 or more yards. Opponents have converted 23 percent. The Redhawks offense has been nearly unstoppable but looking back at their 4 MAC games, they have yet to face any sort of stop unit. Kent St., Ball St., Buffalo and Akron are ranked 106th, 72nd, 113th and 84th in total defensive respectively, allowing and average of 430.7 ypg. The Falcons defense they face Tuesday allows 125 yards less per game and is ranked 17th in the country. They are allowing just 16 ppg and have allowed more than 21 points just twice as well. The winner of this game will be on pace to represent their respective division in the MAC title game while the loser will fall into a first place tie. Don’t expect either team to take a lot of chances here since both defenses are that good. There is a big misconception about Miami in that they are a team that passes all the time. However, they are more balanced than people think as they pass the ball on 51% of their plays (329-311). Bowling Green tends to run the ball more even though they are also known as a team that likes to air it out. They run on 54% of their plays (348-301) from their spread formation and running plays eat up the clock. We capped a 50 point total so we have a lot of value on the under tonight.

But don’t worry. Wednesday we have another very strong card going highlighted by the Louisville/TCU side winner. We also have 3 NBA winners going as well. All 4 of these winners can be purchased for only $14.95 using our One Day Pass. We are 5-0 already this week with more yet to come.

Boston Celtics at Detroit Pistons 7:35 pm EST

    Detroit –6 (3 units)

Detroit returns home after a two game Florida sweep over Orlando and Miami. They lost their opener at the Palace to the Pacers last Wednesday. Last season, the Pistons lost 11 games at home but only lost back-to-back games once. They finished 10-1 SU and 8-3 ATS at home after a home loss. Boston is playing their 3rd straight road game after splitting the first 2 with their most recent game a loss at New Orleans on Saturday. Boston started 2-0 thanks to big efforts from Vin Baker but he didn’t show up against the Hornets and the Celtics didn’t have enough behind him and Paul Pierce to get the job done. We don’t see Baker busting back out against the tough defense of the Pistons. Ben Wallace will be all over him with help from Tayshaun Prince and Elden Campbell. Campbell will be matched up with Mark Blount who has yet to make an impact at the center position for Boston. The Celtics will also start Kedrick Brown at the other forward spot, another player who hasn’t done much to help the offense. The backcourt of Richard Hamilton and PG Chauncey Billups will go against Pierce and upstart PG Mike James. Pierce is obviously the go to guy for Boston but the Pistons have the overall advantage in the backcourt. Boston will be hurt off the bench, as forward Eric Williams is doubtful with a knee injury. Celtics coach Jim O'Brien knows he cannot replace the leadership and knowledge of Williams on defense, especially when he is paired with Pierce. Together, they represent by far Boston's best defensive lineup. The Celtics guards were pressured by the Hornets, which took them a little out of their offense. Detroit used the same type of pressure against Boston in two preseason games, both won by Detroit by a combined 227-184.
