We have two specials going right now.

The NBA is right around the corner as the season starts on October 29th. Purchase our Basketball Season Package for $299 and receive all selections through the NBA Finals. Free Service Play For Sunday October 26, 2003

    (215) St. Louis Rams at (216) Pittsburgh Steelers 1:00 pm EST

    Pittsburgh -1.5 (3 Units)

If the Steelers are to bounce back and make this season meaningful, this is almost a must win game for them. The Steelers have had two weeks to prepare and get healthy, greatly improving the play along the offensive line.

Jerome Bettis will make his first start of the season Sunday as the Steelers try to jump start their struggling running game and end a three-game losing streak. the Steelers are 28th in rushing with an average of 83.3 yards, a remarkably low ranking for a team that historically builds its offense around a power running game. Their 3.1 yards per carry average is down by more than a yard since last season. Only two years ago, the Steelers easily led the league in rushing, and they have never finished lower than No. 18 since the NFL-AFL merger in 1970. The move will at least provide a spark to the unit. The Steelers have had two weeks to evaluate the 2-4 start, and their play-calling surely will be different. The Steelers still have problems along the line, but more dedication to the run could help get Jerome Bettis into a rhythm. With more balance on offense and with more protection from his line, Tommy Maddox should settle in throwing the ball against the Rams' hobbled secondary.

The Steelers are using more cover-2 zones because of poor cornerback play in man-to-man coverage. That places a lot more responsibility on strong safety Mike Logan and free safety Brent Alexander downfield. The Rams thrive on big plays. Wide receivers Torry Holt and Isaac Bruce are averaging 13.1 and 14.7 yards per catch, respectively, and Holt has seven touchdowns. Rams quarterback Marc Bulger has a stronger arm than Kurt Warner and takes more chances downfield, but Bulger does not read the safeties as well as Warner in his prime. That provides more opportunities for interceptions. Logan and Alexander must stay disciplined and get in position to prevent big plays, but an interception or two would go a long way toward camouflaging the Steelers' weakness at cornerback. Rookie Arlen Harris will start at running back on Sunday for the St. Louis Rams, even though there's a chance Lamar Gordon could play and Marshall Faulk could return from a broken hand and knee surgery as he will be the emergency back.

Coming off consecutive losses, Pittsburgh is 14-5 ATS. The Rams have been great at home, but this marks 1st road trip in more than a month and they've been less than special on grass. St. Louis will be on grass for the first time this season, where they are 4-11 ATS the last 3 years. The Rams were just 1-7 SU last year on the road. This is the 1000th game in Steelers history so there will be a lot of pride on that field Sunday afternoon.
