The Cardinals strength matches perfectly against Tulane’s weakness. . UofL is averaging almost 200 yards per game on the ground, while Tulane is giving up 229 — fourth worst in the nation from a unit that ranks dead last in total defense.
Louisville—first in C-USA in run offense—has an intriguing run attack, led by Florida State transfer Eric Shelton. He averages 82.3 yards per game and leads C-USA backs with six touchdowns. Receiver J.R. Russell leads a talented group of receivers with 89.2 yards per game, second-best in C-USA
The Louisville defense is holding opponents to 18.5 points per game. The Cards also have picked off 10 passes — more than they intercepted all last season. On the season, Tulane has lost 11 starters to injuries — three linebackers, two offensive linemen, three defensive backs, two defensive linemen and a tight end. Tulane’s defensive line is depleted after losing starters Bamm Mateen and Daniel Nevil to injury.
As mentioned, the Green Wave is giving up 229.2 rushing yards a game — and a total of 558 in its past two. Opponents are converting on 52percent of their third downs after Houston went 14-of-21.
Last week against them, Cougars ran a school-record 105 plays and held the ball a difficult-to-believe 42 minutes, 57 seconds.
Louisville is a bit healthier. Sophomore wideout and kick returner Broderick Clark missed Saturday’s game with a high hamstring pull but is expected to play Friday. He practiced Monday, and trainers expect to have him ready to face the Green Wave.
Also expected back fulltime is kicker Wade Tydlacka, who returned from an injury late in Saturday’s game and boomed his first kickoff try deep into the end zone. Tydlacka, who was punting and handling kickoffs before his injury, likely won’t return to his punting job, which has been claimed by freshman Brent Moody.
The Cards have players on both sides of the ball who are on fire. Louisville quarterback Stefan LeFors had his best game last week, throwing for 406 yards. In his first two starts, he directed the team to road victories against Kentucky and Syracuse. LeFors has completed 85 of 142 passes (59.9 percent) for 1,383 yards and nine touchdowns. He has thrown five interceptions.
Cardinals linebacker Robert McCune has been on a tear, making 19 tackles two weeks ago and making his first career interception last week. His 76 tackles lead Louisville and are third in Conference USA.
