Clemson Tigers at North Carolina St. Wolfpack 7:45 pm EST

    Clemson +5.5 (2 Units)

Last season’s nationally televised Thursday night debacle against NC State gives Clemson all the incentive it needs this week. They are still haunted by the memories of a 38-6 loss to the Wolfpack last season. This year’s team seems to be different, especially after their 30-0 loss to start the season. It started with senior leadership and enthusiasm, the likes of which hasn’t often been seen in recent years at Clemson. “The attitude of the team has changed,” said Clemson sophomore cornerback Tye Hill. “We’re all looking at the same big picture. We all want the ACC title.” Players said that the improved attitude has caused the winning, rather than vice versa. Defensive end Maurice Fountain said the Tigers might have quit in the past after falling behind 17-10 to Virginia in the third quarter. Attitude goes a long way and it is showing on the defensive side of the ball especially. A porous pass defense and an inconsistent rushing attack have kept NC State from fulfilling its preseason hopes of becoming a front-runner for the ACC title. Clemson is 27th in the country in total defense and they are 33rd against the run. The Wolfpack will go as far as Philip Rivers will take them but a good ground game is important, especially against the Tigers. Charlie Whitehurst is finally getting more relaxed in the Tigers offense and it is showing. Whitehurst has the best career ratio of touchdowns to interceptions (1.83 to 1) of any Clemson player who has 12 or more touchdown passes. It’s easy to see why opposing coaches say Whitehurst is ready to pick up where seniors Matt Schaub of Virginia, Philip Rivers of N.C. State and Scott McBrien of Maryland will leave off after this season. Well, he’s making strides this season and it’s far from over. Yusef Kelly has finally emerged from Bowden’s doghouse. The Tigers have struggled all season on the ground but Kelly started against Virginia and ran the ball 26 times for 89 yards. Not great numbers but numbers that Clemson hasn’t seen yet this year. Clemson's coaches are adjusting their no-huddle signaling system after observing Virginia's defensive players stealing signs Saturday. After Clemson's offense reports to the line of scrimmage, the coaching staff looks over the defense and calls a play. That play is signaled to quarterback Charlie Whitehurst from the sideline. Virginia's players were reading those signs Saturday and reporting Clemson's play calls to one another before the ball was snapped. Did it really matter? Clemson won 30-27 in overtime and gained a season-high 488 yards and made 29 first downs. The NC State defense has looked awful all season long. The Wolfpack has the worst passing defense in the ACC, giving up 325 yards a game. Junior starting cornerback Lamont Reid will miss Thursday's game with a shoulder injury, thus, making the Wolfpack secondary even weaker. NC State has given up an average of 409.2 yards passing in its last four games. NC State is also giving up 30 points and more than 425 yards a game. S Andre Maddox leads the team in tackles with 83 total stops. If you're safety is leading the team in tackles, that's not a good thing. We have the Wolfpack ranked 102nd in pass efficiency defense and they are 95th in total defense. NC State will be missing three starters on Thursday. DE Renaldo Moses, RG Ricky Fowler and Reid are all out with various injuries. Fowler, who switched to offense this season, started all seven games at right guard. He'll either be replaced by Antoine Colvin or Ashley Wingate. Neither Wingate nor Colvin have started a game in their careers. The already depleted defense will have two true freshmen starting at defensive end: Mario Williams and James Martin. Revenge is important but it will not carry the Tigers here. They are playing much better football on both sides of the ball since the season started while the Wolfpack seem to be taking a step back. NC State comes into this one 4-9 ATS in the second game of back-to back home games and the visitor in this series is 5-1 ATS the last six meetings.
