    THE GOLD SHEET

The Gold Sheet EXTRA!!!Technical Play of the Week
MICHIGAN over Illinois...Illini in tailspin, no ****** last 4 in ?03.
Meanwhile, Wolverines solid 11-5 vs. spread last 16 laying DDs at Big
    House.

    NFL KEY RELEASES
PHILADELPHIA by 7 over N.Y. Giants
    DALLAS by 13 over Detroit
UNDER 37 total points in the New England-Miami game

    NCAA KEY RELEASES
SYRACUSE by 9 over Boston College
    GEORGIA by 33 over Vanderbilt
IOWA by 7 over Ohio State

    DETAILED ANALYSIS OF KEY RELEASES

Philadelphia 20 - NY GIANTS 13?These two QBs apparently in asecret contest to out-awful each other TY. N.Y.?s Kerry Collins has thrown 7 ints. last 2 games. Meanwhile, Donovan McNabb, fighting the ?Curse of Rush,? is now under 50% for the season and has 2 ints., 1 fumble, 6 sacks, and only 221 net YP the last two games. However, on the plus side for Philly, defense is starting to get a little healthier, and OL is a a much more veteran unit than Giants? young hands up front, and McNabb has big-play, key-play mobility. N.Y. OL will have to cope with Eagles? very-extensive blitz package. Eagles

Dallas 26 - DETROIT 13?Dallas players taking full advantage oftheir Tuna wisdom and indoctrination, and doing what Bill Parcells has
preached?finding a way to win. They?ve done it 4 straight times, includingtwice on the road and once vs. defending NFC East champ Philly. With QB Q. Carter and Cowboy WRs & DBs playing well, they hold edge over newlyenthusiastic Detroit with its injured WRs (C. Rogers out) & CBs. Moreover, Quincy Carter able to make plays with his feet, and Parcells? aggressive DBs a factor vs. young Detroit QB Harrington.

UNDER 37 Points MIAMI 17 - New England 9?Big payback for Miami, which went from potential AFC East champ to out of the playoffs LY
when it blew 11-pt., 4th-Q lead LY in Foxboro on the last weekend of ?02 reg. season. Dolphin defense now playing superbly (9 ppg last 4), whileconservative, but effective offense has pounded out 4 straight wins &******. Miami, with Ricky (461 YR), enjoys big rush edge, much like LY(Dolphins out-rushed Pats 393-153 in 2 games). Miami ?under? 21-7 last 28 at home; N.E. 8-2 ?under? last 10 on road.

SYRACUSE 31 - Boston College 22?Syracuse HC Pasqualoni will have his team ready to bounce back with a vengeance after shellacking it took at Blacksburg last week against revenge-minded Va. Tech. BC doesn?t have nearly as much team speed as Hokies, and the Orange are on an 11-4-1 spread run last 16 at Carrier Dome.. Syracuse sr. QB R.J. Anderson (no ints. TY) making fewer mistakes than Eagle counterpart jr. Porter & expect Reyes to outduel Knight (was outgained 171-95 at BC LY).

Georgia 42 - VANDERBILT 9?Even if UGA suffers some letdown following 41-14 Tennessee romp, still prefer to ?lay it? vs. outclassed Vandy squad hat gave up 606 yds. in 31-point loss in Athens LY. Dawgs marvelous 6-3 jr. QB Greene (22 of 28 for 228 vs. Vols!) should (again) toy with reeling ?Dore ?D? beaten up by Navy?s option last week. Smartly-coached UGA 12-4-1 vs. spread last 17.

Iowa 20 - OHIO STATE 13?Week off came at ideal time for Iowa, as Hawkeyes expect to get most of their injured players back in action, including WRs Mo Brown & Hinkel. Streak-ending loss at Wisconsin, injury to RB Ross & cheapshot by LB Reynolds add additional distractions & obstacles for Buckeye team that plays more than its share of close games and has had air of invincibility shattered. Iowa?s excellent special teams play give Hawkeyes winning edge.

    COLLEGE KEY RELEASES
    1* KANSAS over Baylor
    1* AUBURN over Mississippi State
2* ARIZONA STATE over North Carolina
    3* TULSA over Nevada-Reno
    4* OREGON STATE over Washington
    4* SOUTH CAROLINA over Lsu
    5* MISSISSIPPI over Alabama
5* COLORADO STATE over Air Force

    ANALYSIS OF TOP RATED SELECTIONS

AUBURN 45 - Mississippi State 7 - (12:30) -- Purring Tigers in Arkansas/LSU sandwich here, but early start prevents any look-ahead. Held Tenn to 4 RYs in last HG, & have allowed only 1 of last 4 foes to top 7 pts. MSt beat Memphis on 100-yd KO return, & sporadically decent on "O", but 41-6 loss to LSU an omen.

KANSAS (HC) 55 - Baylor 14 - (2:00) -- We've ridden the Jays lately, & despite wrenching OT loss to Colorado, we saddle up again. Nearly 600 yds LW, & covered their last 2 HGs by 33½ & 30½ pts. Bears (30 straight league road losses) came from a 203-57 RY edge to a 437-32 RY deficit in a week. Romper!

    POINTWISE PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL PROPHECY

    NFL KEY RELEASES
3* PHILADELPHIA over New York Giants
    4* WASHINGTON over Buffalo
    4* ATLANTA over New Orleans
4* TAMPA BAY over San Francisco
5* ST LOUIS over Green Bay

Philadelphia 20 - NEW YORK GIANTS 13 - (1:00) -- Would you believe that these 2 are both 2½ games behind Dallas? To think that the Giants had a one game lead over the 'Boys after opening week. NY fields the worst rush "O" in the NFL, & with Collins tossing 7 INTs the past 2 weeks, the result has been just a lone TD in those 2 losses. That despite FD edges of 25-15 & 26-12. Philly also struggling, despite its top rated rushing "D". McNabb is now below 50% completions for the season (11-of-26 vs Dallas, for 126 yds). The Eagles normally excel in this setup, as they are 22-9-2 ATS as dogs, & 17-3 ATS as RDs vs division foes off a SU road loss. Coincides nicely with NY's 2-12 ATS log at home off a road setback. We take the pts.

    THE RED SHEET

RATINGS: 89 & ABOVE: SUPERIOR PLAY 88 & BELOW: ABOVE AVERAGE PLAY

    SUMMARY OF PLAYS:
    89* KANSAS STATE
    89* KANSAS
    88* OREGON STATE
    88* SYRACUSE
    88* MICHIGAN STATE
    88* SAN DIEGO (NFL)

    DETAILED ANALYSIS OF PLAYS

KANSAS STATE 56 - Colorado 21 - (2:10 EDT) -- Line opened at KansasSt minus 21, and is now minus 18. The answer is: 42-6, 40-7, 44-9, & 44-10. The question is: What were recent scores of Wildcat games, in which they were installed as double digit favorites, immediately after suffering outright losses. Kansas St was figured as the consensus Number 6 team in the land, on our Polls column in the season's first issue of Pointwise. But they are currently on an extremely rare 3-game slide, with those lofty expectation now dashed. However, this squad is still loaded, & rarely lets this type setup get away. The Buffs can move it, but theirdefense has become a sieve (47, 47, 42, & 47 pts allowed in last 4 tilts). Revenge! RATING: KANSAS STATE 89

KANSAS 55 - Baylor 13 - (2:00) -- Line opened at Kansas minus 18½, and is now minus 20. Reality came crashing down upon the Bears a week ago, & it wasn't pretty. After winning 3 straight games for the first time since 1996, Morriss' squad showed that it has miles to go beforebeing granted the "respectability" title. In their loss to A&M, the Bears allowed 73 pts, 32 FDs, 437 RYs, & 282 PYs, for a not-so-nice 719-184 total yd deficit. Running into one of the most efficient offenses in the land the very next week, is all that Baylor needs. The Jayhawks must shake the effects of last week's killer OT loss to Colorado, but after being down for so long, it won't be a problem. QB Whittemore (2nd rated QB in land) leads it. RATING: KANSAS 89

OREGON STATE 45 - Washington 20 - (10:00) -- Line opened at OregonSt minus 10, and is still minus 10. The Beavers had last week off, to properly prepare for this revenge contest. A year ago, they did nearly everything that they wanted vs the Huskies, in a 410-199 yardage edge, but couldn't overcome five interceptions by Anderson, losing 41-29. Thus, to say that OregSt wants this one badly, would be a hugeunderstatement. And get it they will, as they are on a 15-2 spread run as home chalks of less than 17 pts, & have covered their first 2 Pac Ten games by 22 & 14 pts. The normally dangerous Huskies have been outscored 67-17 the
last 6 quarters, & have a 74-25 scoring deficit on the road. Beavers!RATING: OREGON STATE 88

SYRACUSE 37 - Boston College 30 - (12:00) -- Line opened at BC minus 3, and is now minus 4. Well, the 'Cuse certainly came up empty in its trip to Blacksburg, to take on the 3rd rated Va Tech Hokies. They were stung by a pair of TDs on punt returns, in less than a 2-minute span ofthe first quarter, & that was pretty much that. But blowout losses in their road games with the Hokies are commonplace. Lost 31-7 & 31-3 at VaTech(17½ & 25 pt ATS losses), in the Donovan McNabb years, when Orange went 35-14 SU. Syracuse piled up 30 FDs when they last hosted BC ('01), & 'Cuse covered its last HG by 23½ pts. BC's jump to the ACC has added huge incentive for Orange. RB Reyes back on track here.
    RATING: SYRACUSE 88

Michigan State 30 - MINNESOTA 27 - (12:00) -- Line opened at Minnesota minus 7½, and is now minus 6. Earlier in the week, we had the Spartans as a highly rated play, as their transformation under new coach Smith is more than impressive. Simply put, they've attained the ability towin. And catching the Gophers off their monumental collapse vs arch-rival Michigan, is just about the perfect setup. We decided againststepping out, due to our respect for that Minny overland game which ran for an astounding 424 yds vs the Wolves. However, respected sources assure that this is indeed the place to grab the Spartans. Gophers will find runningagainst this "D" a bit more perplexing, & Smoker gives MSt steadying hand. RATING: MICHIGAN STATE 88

San Diego 20 - CLEVELAND 16 - (1:00) -- Line opened at Cleveland minus 6, and is still minus 6. Seems almost too easy, doesn't it? Browns are on a 3-1 run, following their 0-2 start, with one of those wins a slaughter of the Steelers, & that on the road. However, that win over Pitt represents Cleveland's only decent offensive showing of the season, having been held below 15 pts in 5 of their other 6 outings. Obviously, the slack has more than been picked up by the Browns' defense, but that can't go on indefinitely. The Chargers' "D" is hardly inthe same league with Cleveland's, but before the break, San Diego's offense was kicking into gear. The visitor in Brown games is on a 12-2 spread run. Call narrow upset. RATING: SAN DIEGO 88

NEAR CHOICES (Rated 87): Auburn, Texas, South Carolina, Georgia - NFL: Philadelphia, Denver, Oakland

Improved? Most definitely, but let?s not over hype Carolina. Keep in mind that in a worse case scenario, the Panthers would be 2-3 instead of 5-0. The Panthers have won four of their games by a total of 13 points. They?ve won three of these games on the final play. Carolina?s only dominant victory came against the Falcons, who hadn?t won since opening week going into Monday night. The Titans have always been a solid road team under Jeff Fisher, compiling a 38-29 away from home mark. Both teams feature tough, hard-hitting defenses. The key to this matchup, though, is Steve McNair. He is at his absolute peak, and his receivers are stepping up, including intriguing rookie Tyrone Calico. Thanks to McNair, WR Derrick Mason is becoming a star. RB Eddie George is slowing down, but he still is a savvy veteran who can hurt the Panthers if they forget about him and just concentrate on McNair. On the defensive side of the ball for Tennessee, Jevon Kearse is back to his dominating ways. Recovered at last from a foot injury, Kearse already has 5 _ sacks. The Panthers rely on powerful Stephen Davis. Davis, who bruised his arm last week, has almost as many yards as the Panthers have through the air. Davis has 121 carries for 641 yards. Carolina quarterbacks have passed 123 times for 710 yards. Tennessee?s defensive weakness is pass coverage with CB Samari Rolle out with a dislocated elbow. Jake Delhomme isn?t a good enough quarterback to take advantage of the Titans? lack of depth in the secondary. The Panthers have relied too much on Davis, who last week was held under 100 yards rushing for the first time. The Titans? massive and active defensive line and linebackers will key on Davis and change of pace back DeShaun Foster. The Panthers? luck is due to run out. TENNESSEE 27-13.

The brains of Dolphins offensive coordinator Norv Turner against the brilliant defensive game plans of Patriots coach Bill Belichick. This normally would make for an interesting chess match if Belichick had a full deck. But Belichick is missing numerous pieces. The Patriots were without half a dozen starters last week, and star cornerback Ty Law is playing on a bad right ankle. The Patriots are so beat-up it?s a rare sight when they can even practice in pads anymore. Nearly one-third of their starters are out or limping. Not only are the Patriots without several key defensive players, including nose guard Ted Washington and linebackers Rosevelt Colvin and Ted Johnson, but they?ve had injuries to skill position players Antowain Smith and Deion Branch. The running back situation was so dire when Kevin Faulk had to sit out two weeks ago the Patriots had to dig up Mike Cloud, who was ineffective against the Giants last Sunday. All of these injuries and personnel switches have taken a toll on QB Tom Brady, who has six TD passes and seven interceptions. Brady himself is battling a sore elbow among other aliments. The Dolphins are healthy and expect to get back LB Junior Seau, who missed last week because of a hamstring injury. Brady needs to have a big game, because Miami is allowing barely three yards per rush and has not given up a run of more than 15 yards. The Dolphins have also forced 11 turnovers the last four games. Miami is 14-4-1 ATS in October since ?98, and have won and covered their last five home games against the Patriots. The Dolphins have a big edge on the ground with Ricky Williams. Miami is 10-2 when Williams rushes for 100 yards. Williams? presence should force Patriots safety Rodney Harrison to play closer to the line, which should make the passing game easier for Jay Fielder. MIAMI 28-6.

OK, so things are not so bad for Gary Barnett in Boulder these days. His Buffaloes are off to a 3-3 start, and got a big revenge win over in-state rival Colorado State. Forget it ? not even a politician can spin that one. Despite breaking even in the win column the 2002 campaign has been a disaster already for the ?Return to Dominance? regime, and it is only going to get worse, not better. Now the shallow Buffaloes have to recapture their legs off of that draining overtime win over Kansas to face an angry Wildcat squad that not only wants to take out some frustrations off of back-to-back road losses, but also to get double revenge after a pair of close losses in this recent series. Even in the best of circumstances Bill Snyder has not been friendly to opponents that he could overwhelm, and now we have one of the genuine situations in which he not only needs a win, but needs win by a significant margin. And with that as a motivation, there is little that a battered Colorado defense can do about it. Four straight opponents have scored at least 44 points against them in regulation and they are giving up big chunks of yardage both over land (Baylor ran for 202) and through the air (Florida State and Kansas both passed for over 400). With walk-ons having to supply depth to a ravaged DL, the relentless pound of El Roberson and Darren Sproules takes a tremendous toll here, and sets up some easy strikes down the field via play action when there is no pass rush. KANSAS STATE 50-13.

MIAMI O. over BALL STATE* by 30

The common perception is that programs like Miami O. play a tough road schedule to pick up needed paychecks, but perhaps there is more to that for Terry Hoeppner and his RedHawks. Since Ben Roethlisberger took over at QB two seasons ago they have played the likes of Michigan, Iowa (twice), Hawaii, North Carolina, L.S.U. and Colorado State on the road, and those games were for more than paychecks ? they won a couple of them outright as underdogs, and have competed well in almost all settings. What it really does is give them a terrific focus when they step down in class into the M.A.C., and having been toughened up vs. those superior non-conference opponents they have recorded a 6-2 SU and ATS mark on the road in league play, with a defeat in each of those categories coming by the slimmest of margins in that bitter 36-34 loss to Marshall at the gun last year. This week they play their first conference road game of the current campaign, and now that they are much more than Roethliesberger they can control this in many ways. The ground game has become a solid compliment to the air show, getting 407 yards at 5.1 per clip in two conference wins, while the defense has been outstanding, holding both Colorado State and Northwestern to their season low in rushing in easy road routs. Having coasted last week (Roethlisbeger left early and no RB carried the ball 10 times), and with only Kent State on deck, no reason to not expect a full effort here for the whole 60 minutes. MIAMI O. 43-13.
